OAKLAND, Pa. (AP) -- The Mormon Church has announced plans to restore a northeastern Pennsylvania site that officials say played a significant role in the growth of the church.
Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints say the Susquehanna County site, formerly known as the town of Harmony and near the present-day town of Susquehanna, is significant as the place where members believe Joseph Smith translated much of the Book of Mormon from ancient writings on golden plates in the early 19th century.
