I'm not a big sports fan but I watched the Jets/Steelers game with my brother inlaw and was surprised to see the coin tossed when the game went into OT looked like a Morgan silver dollar, anyone else pick up on that? or am I mistaken?

was under the understanding that the nfl had it's own special made coin for
game tosses ???

I've always heard it was a Morgan....and if you're talking about the Steeler game, then I saw it too and even made a comment to my roommate about any coin collector would probably frown on throwing a coin that's in that good of condition around into the grass and dirt :) . It looked like it was in decent shape anyway.

I spoke to my MD'ing buddy this morning and he spotted it too. Definitely a Morgan, I wonder who's supplies them? does the NFL keep a box of them in a safe somewhere? or does the ref. have to supply his own?

I'm pretty sure the NFL has their own coin. Its possible maybe they took some of the designs from a Morgan but who knows.

My wife told me lastnight that she had some coins from her grandfather. A 1879-S mint condition Morgan dollar!!! It looks uncirculated. She also has a 1922 Peace dollar in circulated condition.

I might need to swing the detector through the rest of her stuff and see what else she has that hasn't told me.

I also thought they had their own NFL logo coin
