morgan dollars-first coin "find"

Hi all, I wasn't really looking but I found a small cache of coins and 2-dollar bills in a little wooden box at my (formerly grandfather's) house. It was nested in an old clock-something I collect. They're mostly american silver dollars, 50cent pieces, and quarters with a few silvery pennies and the rest shillings and pence.
Two were silver Morgan dollars 1889 and 1888. The 1888 dollar has an "o" under the wreath on the backside. The 1889 dollar has no mark-does that mean anything?
Oh, and one of the 2-dollar bills is a 1946 and different from the others-likewise, mean anything? Just checking, I've not put a lot of time into coins.
Thanks,
Paddy

Re: morgan dollars-first coin "find"

Can you take a really good picture of the front of the 1888 coin? Are you interested in selling them?

Re: morgan dollars-first coin "find"

yes, I'll take a picture-that would help. I won't be selling them though, they're worth more to me as a family keepsake right now-hope that doesn't dissuade help. Unless... if you've got a loony notion to give me too much for it, which will then force me to reason logically-and rarely does a keepsake win out then!

Oh, the 1888 coin is in a sort of horsehoe string tie thing-a necktie of sorts. It has the "o" under it and I've seen others of those-a mint stamp perhaps like the cc of Carson City? But I don't understand why the 1889 dollar has not a stamp there.
anyway, I'll get on the picture.
Thanks,
Paddy

Re: morgan dollars-first coin "find"

The one without a mintmark was made in Philly. The one with the O was made in New Orleans.

Neither one is worth a whole lot, unless the 1888o is the Hot Lips variety, which is some serious doubling around the lips on the obverse.

Paddy:
I've never heard of a 1946 $2.00 bill.
Could you be referring to the 1976 series signed by Neff and Simon? What Federal Reserve city issued the note? (The city is mentioned in the circle with a letter on the left front side.)
Thanks,

Well you answered my question, and Jeffro is right the coin without a mintmark was minted in Philly. They never stamp mint marks.

Here is a picture of the "hot lips". If your 1888 looks like this, and it's in good condition, you might wanna see about getting it out of that necktie without damaging it! They're worth a ton. First picture here:

Re: morgan dollars-first coin "find"

Thanks guys,
Here's a pic. I'll look a little closer for the hot-lips. Not worth much is ok, I'd prefer keeping them-can you imagine the things they've paid for over the years, the hands they've passed through, etc.?

I'll have to go back to the house to check on the 2-dollar bill. I remember it being less green/more silvery and dated to the 40's or 50's, perhaps '53, but definitely not later than that. The others were '76 and green like a typical bill. Lords, I should probably pull out all the coins and check them closer-maybe I've got a retirement in there!

Paddy:
The 'modern era' $2 bills were issued in 1928, 1953,1963,1976 and 1995. I don't recall if another was issued after 1995. If you tell me the Series and whether or not a star symbol preceded the first number in the serial number, I can then tell you the total bills of that kind produced for that Federal Reserve and its relative value if it were in crisp uncirculated condition.
Of course, the personal history value will far exceed the collector's value--but a great find in any event.
Don..

Re: morgan dollars-first coin "find"

That does not look like a "hot lips" variety :) Thankfully whoever mounted it was kind enough not to solder it in there! Should come out real easy someday.

Congrats on the finds! Those are some lovely coins.

There was one more print run of $2 bills in 2003. I wish they'd circulate more often.
