More Tenn. CSA Relics:Artillery Gimlet,Sugar Loaf Picket Bullet,"57" Base Bullet

As I told Creskol early this am, we were trying to get a short hunt in before the rain tomorrow and snow predicted for Sunday for middle Tennessee. I coaxed Dman and Josh back to the Gen. John Hunt Morgan Camp that we hunted last Friday for another short hunt. They came kicking and screaming-LOL. We recovered a few relics as shown in the first pic. Josh had the best find with the iron artillery gimlet used to clean the vent holes on the cannons from either Col. Robert Cobb's Kentucky Battery (4 cannon) or Lt. C.C. Corbett's Kentucky Battery (4 cannon) who were camped there with Morgan. That relic is the "T' handled tool inside the horseshoe and it was was 10 inches deep. That lucky Josh dug another Enfield with a "57" base mark. That's two weeks in a row AND the only base marked bullets he has ever dug.
The second pic is of the .40 cal. Sugar Loaf Picket bullet for a country rifle (probably Kentucky Rifle) that one of the Confederates brought from home. Thay have a rounded bottom and are rare to find in CS Camps. This is the third that I have dug at that camp. I also dug the old pocket knife in that pic and it was deep also. Happy Hunting from the "Tennessee Trio" (as Modern Miner calls us) and thanks for taking your time to look, Quindy..

Re: More Tenn. CSA Relics:Artillery Gimlet,Sugar Loaf Picket Bullet,"57" Base Bullet

Nice Saves Y'all, I had a friend ask me a few years ago what the 57 meant.....Of course when I told them it meant .577 caliber he said "Oh I'd have never thought that's what it meant cuz I thought they were .58 caliber" :D :D

Congrats on the Artillery Gimlet Josh, another proof that there's still nice iron relics to be had out there.

Re: More Tenn. CSA Relics:Artillery Gimlet,Sugar Loaf Picket Bullet,"57" Base Bullet

Great variety of CW relics guys. I am loving that pocketknife. :icon_thumleft: Awesome piece for a display.
Thanks for the info on the gimlet Q. I always thought a Gimlet was a drink. :tongue3: :laughing9:
Sneaking that hunt in looks to be a wise choice. :hello2:
As far as.......

I think Dman is just getting tired of carrying your equipment around like Tiger Woods caddy. :laughing9: :notworthy:

Great hunt,
Doug

Josh, the first iron relic that I dug from that camp about 13 years ago was a Springfield gun tool and we are still digging deep iron relics. HH, Quindy.

Thanks Z. CS Camps do have unusual bullets because they had pretty much the same weapons they used at home in the early camps like this one. Thanks for looking, Quindy.

No lead wizard dog-just the M &M bullet book and a set of calipers. U.S. sites just don't have the variety that early CS Camps do here. HH, Quindy.

Re: More Tenn. CSA Relics:Artillery Gimlet,Sugar Loaf Picket Bullet,"57" Base Bullet

I have only dug 1 40 cal. "sugar loaf" in close to 20 years. That little beauty is a great find! The Gimlet is a good find too--one you don't see dug very often at all.

Well done!
