Every saturday I go out to yardsales and look for any kind of silver, especially the cheap stuff. I try to buy everything marked .925 or STERLING. But I also spot things that are not marked at all but just have that "silver" look to them. I pay even less for them. Well last night at our MD club meeting I checked out some of my bigger questionable pieces. Only had time to check about 6-7 of 20 and most were silver!

Just added almost 4 ounces to my stash. (Probable cost $6-8)

I haven't found any gold or silver at yardsales yet. Well, I haven't really looked hard for it, but I have seen plenty of jewelry. I have picked up quite a bit of cheap brass, a little bit of aluminum, and a tad bit of copper. What do you tell the salesperson when they ask what you are going to do with women's jewelry? Maybe, if I start looking and am asked that same question, I will just give a flip of the wrist and tell them it is for my own, personal collection I wouldn't feel comfortable telling them that I planned on selling it for scrap. I guess, I could tell them it is for my wife, sister, or mom, but then I would be lying. Last weekend I was at a yardsale by myself and the older lady running the sale mentioned that she hardly ever sees males at yardsales, let alone males looking by themselves. Also, how do you check a piece of silver jewelry with no markings to see if it is sterling?

No one has ever asked me why I wanted jewelry that way. I live in CA (the land of fruits and nuts ) So the limp wristed are a common occurrence

I mostly get asked if I am a jeweler, I used to make silver/turquoise stuff many years ago. So I say, I used to be. I always have a small magnifying glass on a cord around my neck so I look at everything up close.

My metal detecting club has a T-4000 electronic gold/silver tester (about $400) it is very accurate.
