Police: Melbourne resident shoots, kills home invader

MELBOURNE, Fla. —
A Brevard County home invasion turned deadly when the homeowner pulled out a gun and shot the alleged intruder.
Melbourne police said it happened around 2 a.m. Sunday at a home on Mathers Street.
One neighbor described hearing the gunshots.
"I thought somebody was tapping on my window, and then I heard a knock again and I said, 'Well hang on a second,'" a neighbor said.
The neighbor said that what he thought were knocks on his window turned out to be gunshots from his neighbor.
"I went out the back door, nobody was there. I went out the front door, nobody was there. (I) come out here to have a cigarette, and the cops were coming and swarmed the place," the neighbor said.
Melbourne police said when they arrived at the home they found that Jermaine Williams had been shot and killed.
Police said they believe Williams was in the process of committing a home invasion.
Inside the home were a father, mother and young child.
Police said they believe that Williams made his way into the kitchen, where he was confronted by the man living there. Police said Williams was shot seven times.
"I just can't figure out why he went in there like that when there was somebody in there," a neighbor said.
Police said no charges have been filed against the man who lived in the home. They said they are continuing to investigate the incident.
