Trying to learn all I can. I'm having such fun hunting for cool looking rocks. Even if that's all they are, I still like them and will create an outside display of some kind with them!
These are rocks I found interesting because of the red in them. Pictures are wet and dry.

I would get the National Audubon societies field guide to rocks. I use mine all the time. & the laymans guide to roadside geology is good. there are several in that series, for different states. I have found that one quite helpful. Glad you are getting into it. It's been a life long passion for me.

Yeah, Simmons.. Books are your freidns.. However, using them to compare rocks to rocks etc.. is a good thing and often I used books like "Crystal Bible" by Judy Hall.. whcih has a diffeant point of view on what a rocks properties might be.. This is where the lines get crossed.. Although the books are great to help you id stuff you find.. most of the books have their own view of what the minerals properties are.. and they doint see eye to eye.. So use them to find out what soemthing is.. as for what something can provide you with (power or propeties) wise.. best trust your own judgement.

Thanks Wizard! I'll remember that. I need to go to the library next week and see what I can find.

the center photos have a lustre resembling chert, maybe even Opalite (mixture of opal and chalcedony).
Just guessing though!
