Are you guys running your MXT's in relic mode or coin mode when hunting coins? I've tried running the relic mode to hunt coins but must admit that's a load of signals to keep up with.Changing to mixed mode does seem to help quite a bit though. Should the deeper targets be giving similar VDI numbers when scanned from two different directions? I've noticed on some of the deeper targets the VDI will be on the money, yet when scanned from a different direction will be completely different. Lastly, do most of you only dig the hard, repeatable signals or are you digging everything? I decided after the last two hunts that if I dig everything, I'll cover a 20'x 20' area about every two hunts ;D, any ideas?

:coffee2: :coffee2:....I don't have a ..MXT.. but have used them and i found out that if you coin hunt in the relic mode and hit a 25 cent coin it will read button or buckle if you get a hit on any coin it will read button buckle or bullet.......So when coin hunting with it i run it in...Coin & Jewelry...  ..GOT MY MXT BACK THE GUY I SOLD IT TO DID NOT WANT IT................

I only hunt coins in coin mode on my mxt. and if the target says coin in one direction but not the other it usually is not going to be a coin. some times on the deeper targets it might read coin or something wort digging but it might be a rusty piece of something, but it might be a coin so on the deeper targets I will dig a little ways down and then rescan to see if it still reads the same, and if does not I sometimes dig it to see what it is.

Guess I should have clarified that so I didn't look like an idiot. I read somewhere(I think an engineer report?) that you could get better depth out of an MXT by running it in relic mode and using the VDI numbers as a reference to dig or not. Just wondering if anyone was actually doing that......

Right on Pennyhunter. I don't rely too much on the VDI once I get a good solid signal. When hunting old places and there isn't much trash I will always use the relic mode because of its tone ID. I won't use it in a park though too many tabs. My favorite coil is the 6x10.

I hunt coins in coin mode. And Ditto to what Pennyhunter said :coffee2:

I only use relic mode when hunting an old home site or such. I use zero or low descrimination unless it is infested with iron. When I do get an iron hit I will quickly scan it from another angle and if still iron then I keep moving. If I get an iron reading one direction and ferrus the other direction I will dig in case there is a good target being masked by a nail or some other iron. If I have good luck and some good finds and can return to the site I may come back at another time and dig some of that iron if for no other reason than I may unmask some good stuff. When I find a place infested with iron I will trigger forward to remove the iron signals. When I use relic mode I don't pay much attention to the VDI, just dig dig dig. All other times I use coin and jewelry mode.

Still learning my MXT, so I use Coin & Jewerly for coin hunting. I have yet to try the Relic mode.

I hate the relic mode. That low honking, sick goose sound it makes drives me nuts. If it's not hot and I don't have a headache, I dig most everything. LOL :tongue3:

hunting in relic mode is interesting and fun to try once in a while. set your disc just below nickle and everything below will be a low tone all numbers above your setting will be high tone if you only want silver set above pull tab and cherry pick. remember the vdi # stay the same still a 83 on a quarter in relic mode just the icon changes. have fun

I used to have a MXT & always used relic mode, with center position that gives a low tone to items below the disc setting & a high tone to items above the disc setting. I sert it to 3 o'clock so tabs & below had a low tone. Just had to look at meter then to see if maybe a nickel. Of course you could have high tone for all but iron if you wanted to dig almost everything.

I tried coin & jewelry mode, but it seemed the beep was almost as solid on rejected items as on accepted items. Perhaps this was caused by using the MXT above preset sensitivity, but I liked that extra volume on the deeper coins. HH, George (MN)

My thoughts on the MXT is that it is one of the best VLF detectors that Whites makes to me it is better than the XLT & DFX ...........also just set the knobs and switches and start hunting.......... No matter if it is coins or relics or gold.....Top notch detector.............When i first had one i did not like it ......and sold it....should have kept it .but now for a all around detector the MXT can't be beat .......i had the Minelab X-Terra 70 did not like it to me the Sovereign & Musketeer are a lot better than the X-Terra 70.................. and i liked the MXT better than the X70............. i will not get rid of my Sovereign or Musketeer really like those two detectors...I like those two better than the MXT
