Re: more goodies from my illinois vacation

That appears to be an amulet that was either blessed at the church "NS of Lourdes" (A church in Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and/or purchased there. Very nice finds  Like you said, take it easy, the goodies will still be in the ground when you feel up to the task of digging them out. ;D

Re: more goodies from my illinois vacation

Its great to get out even if for ten minutes at a time. You look to have a pretty good site right out your front door. Your home is probably one of the ones in KY that I have driven by and dreamed of hunting. Do a little bit of research and you may find other great sites minutes from your home, there was quite a bit of CW action all around that area, even locating areas of troop movement and encampment can yield great finds. Even if you are unable to hunt the areas you locate just learning the history is a lot of fun. Be sure to document your reearch so maybe someday your descendants will have some good spots to hunt, also try and rack your brain and remember some old swimming holes or picnic groves that you could pass along, good luck...Shoot

Lourdes, France is best known as the home of St. Bernadette. Here is a brief history. There is a lot of information on the internet about St. Bernadette and Lourdes, France. What I believe you have is a souvenir from the holy site.

In 1858, a fourteen-year-old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous had a series of eighteen visions of the Virgin Mary who appeared in a niche in the grotto of Massabielle near Lourdes, a village on the Gave de Pau river in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France. The first apparition occurred on 11 February 1858. During her ninth apparition, on 25 February, Bernadette claimed to have been directed to a spring that had hitherto not existed in the grotto. Its discovery by Bernadette, witnessed by hundreds of onlookers, was eventually declared miraculous. Later studies have shown that the water is pure and contains chlorides of soda, lime and magnesia, bicarbonates of lime and magnesia, silicates of lime and aluminium, oxide of iron, sulphate of soda, phosphate, and organic matter. Otherwise, it is believed to contain no therapeutic ingredients. Subsequently, however, the water was claimed to be capable of healing the sick and lame. Of the many thousands of pilgrims who visit Lourdes every year, some claim to be have been miraculously healed. It is estimated that the spring has produced 27,000 gallons of water each week since it first emerged during Bernadette's visions.
