Besides the friction primer, I also found this piece of iron. After beating off some rust , I think I have a revolver barrel. The barrel is 10 inches long. After knocking some rust out the opening , it looks like the diameter opening is between .36 to .44. Any ideas on make/model? IMG_1165.webpIMG_1164.webpIMG_1163.webpIMG_1162.webp

Definitely a barrell there. Can't tell which one though.

I moved this request from Today's Finds! over to What Is It? for more exposure.

Breach barrel ?

Not from a revolver. A single shot pistol. And likely flintlock as there is no drum or snail for a percussion nipple.

I am hoping an expert figures this out. It has a ten inch barrel. Thats long.

nobody will ever be able to tell what it is from sadly. there were too many different old guns made and one rusty barrel is not enough to get any maker IDs from.

When I first looked at it I thought there was a sight on the muzzle, but now I see it's actually a lug on the bottom of the barrel which tells me it had a captive ram rod.... it may be something like this one in the link, but a conclusive ID will be near impossible. It's a really great find!

New Orleans, you da' man. I also notice what I thought to be the underside of the barrel a brass site. Wasn't sure. . Check out the pics. The sight is dead on. Also, on the opposite side of the sight is the part for the ram rod. You can even make out where the pivot screw went. Good eye!IMG_1169.webpIMG_1169.webpIMG_1170.webpIMG_1168.webp

This is one of those finds that makes you wonder how it ended up where it did. By the war that pistol was long obsolete, and I'm sure no one on the Northern side would have brought it down with them. Was it captured from a rebel soldier? Taken from a home? If only some of these things could talk.

However it got there, with a careful cleaning and preservation it'll look great on the wall. You definitely want to get that rust off and get the inside of the barrel cleaned out and then hot wax it before it starts coming apart.

[Interesting side note: there is an obstruction about 8 inches down the barrel. I think its a stuck round ball. I'm having it x-rayed at a trade school that teaches non-destructive testing for pipelines in the middle of June. Can't wait!
