Did some cleanup at the family camp and did some metal detecting afterward. It's an old dump site, or atleast full of junk.. I usually just pick a spot and dig and sift lol. Today was more focused though. Used my detector to pick out the better sounding targets from all the iron... and boy did it! Now keep in mind, these are dump finds, not gold coins etc lol! The first, I believe is a rosette or other decorative piece for some type of horse tack. The "Shank" is fully intact and has just a very thin hole for a heavy shank. I dont know if this is the shank, just using button terminology as it's the closest thing I know Haha.I reckon it could be a button too, but its heavy, large and just screams rosette to me. Fancy cowboy stuff lol. If it was a woman's item, I would think it would be a pin with the size and weight... but I could be wrong! Im thinking horse tack though. Not to mention, I find leather straps and iron and brass buckles along with horse shoes, horse shoe nails and chains etc. I also think a blacksmith/farrier shed was located in the area... maybe we are hunting remnants of an old building? The stones were shining coming out of the ground. The item is not magnetic whatsoever. I'd just like opinions on what exactly it is and an age is always nice! The second piece is a mystery. It is solid brass I am almost positive, could be copper. It is very solid and heavy for its size. It appears too ornamental to be something hidden wherever it's from. It was found near the rosette or button and is blowing my mind Haha. I see no markings anywhere other than the decorative design. The small hole in the top(bottom) is threaded to accept something. What? I'm not sure lol. I have found parts to some old engines... so maybe something from that? Is this horse tack of some kind too? Hopefully somebody recognizes it! I also found another big old horse shoe, a skeleton key(to match my old glass door knob I reckon) and more hand forged chain and whatsit's than I could count. I cant seem to cut my posts shorter, but I'll spare you the extra pics of junk lol! Any info is much appreciated and I hope ya'll enjoy my finds! Hope everybody is well and safe!

Cool relic hunt, congrats! :occasion14:

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

It's easy to let time slip by while finding old treasures! Maybe the piece is a antique mirror holder for a motorbike, but it's just a guess. Good luck on finding more stuff!

If that threaded hole goes all the way through, it might be a sliding adjustment piece for a rack. A set screw would go in that hole and lock to a pipe or shaft.

Looks like a nice relic hunt. I like that vintage jewelry.

Thanks for the support and guesses everybody! The threaded hole on the brass piece does go all the way through INTO the larger circle. I can see what you mean. Bigger hole slipped around a rod and slides up and down(left, right etc). Tighten down the set screw and it holds tight. I'm gonna venture to say this is some form of what you mentioned @cudamark. Very helpful!

The button looks high Victorian to me. I don't think it was a functional button (ie not put throw a button hole) but was sewn onto something for decoration, maybe even a hat??

Yes sir, @CRUSADER ! I agree. This was purely fancy decoration. A real bobby dazzler Haha! Fyi, I learned the term "Bobby Dazzler" from "The Andy Griffith Show"... not from the fellow on " Curse of oak island" lol. I have only the other finds from the area to go on as far as age... but it's quite an age range to say the least! My first guess was 1930s-1950s fancy cowboy/cowgirl type. I live in a town where people STILL ride their horses to the local grocery store on nice days. Not uncommon to see a couple horses tied to the bike/moped rack out front. I am looking for similar rhinestones to replace the missing ones now. I'm a jeweler and work with resin and could probably make my own copies, but I have connections online for vintage beads, gems, rhinestones etc. See if I cant atleast replace the missing stones. This thing popped out of the ground like a piece of treasure, I'll tell you what! Sure was exciting, and will make a very nice display piece!

The origins of Bobby Dazzler is a description of a person not a thing, so it's now largely mis-used. It is also a dialect the Northerners use & I'm a Southerner.

Those are some pretty stones on that old piece of jewelry!

@CRUSADER I always wondered what the meaning behind it was! All I could think of (I'm just a country Southern USA boy) was that a "bobby" was a term for a police officer of some type. I didnt see how "dazzling" a "bobby" would be flattering for an item, so I figured it must be my mistake. I guess I could just google it, but you still have to weed through the muck to find truth. On the episode of the "Andy Griffith Show" I was referring to, a young boy was dressed in his finest suit and was called a " bobby dazzler"... maybe its referring to a person in very nice uniform or clothes? I guess I'm off topic, but danged if I ain't curious! @divine profit I am really not sure about these stones. I think they are rhinestones of some kind, but held up amazingling well under ground. As did the rest of the item. I dont have a stone tester to check, but the way they were set (can see where the stones are missing) doesnt usually happen with quality stones. Unless this button happens to be a lot older than I am thinking. I was planning a trip to my local gun/pawn shop soon... maybe they'll check and see if these are real stones for me. I look forward to any further replies and will be sure to update if I find any more info.

No-one knows where the 'bobby' element of the saying came from, only the obvious dazzling bit.
