Montana rules for detecting?

I'll be in the area, and would love to snoop around a ghost town with my detector. But, I don't want to trespass. Can anyone tell me about the rules/customs in the Montana area? Also, any tips on a good location would be appreciated. I'm not asking for your "secret spot", I just want to put some miles on my detector, without bothering anyone. Thanks.

Thanks for the tips. I'll be in the area about a week. Camping, so not staying in any particular place. I thought I would spend most of my time in the area between Yellowstone and Glacier parks.

Are most of the ghost towns around there private, or are there BLM areas that are worth searching?
