Title: "Mongo: Adventures in Trash" by Ted Botha.
Mongo means any discarded object that is retrieved.
Every one of us who enjoys treasure hunting ought to read this book. It is available used everywhere online for about $3.
The stories follows a series of people, from the guy down on his luck who systematically collects all the aluminum cans he can to rebuild his finances, to the woman who travels the city streets of New York at 3 AM to rummage through the discards of the wealthy before the garbage men pick them up (you'd be amazed at what they find), to the guys who excavate old privy pits and find all manner of treasures, to the guy who uses his metal detector at dumping grounds where the city had dredged the river bed and discarded the sludge (you'd really be amazed at what he finds).
Anybody who enjoys treasure hunting, and who might even be a scavenger at heart (like me), ought to read this one. It came in below the radar and I found it by accident. It remains one of my favorite books.
