"Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

Hello Everyone,

Digging wheaties is almost as much fun as digging silver.....Um, okay, not quite!!

You know the old saying "Momma said there would be days like this"....well, I'm referring to a day where you go out detecting at an old park (1870's), dig 50 wheaties, including an '09 VDB (darn no S), semi-key '10s, semi-key '15s, one 1889 Indian, '37 Buff, and end up with only 2 silver ('36, '42 mercs). I had such a day yesterday. Currently, I have about a 4.5 wheat to 1 silver ratio for the year. Yesterday's ratio (50 to 2) was completely unrealistic. I was hoping for around 10 silvers, but I apparently stumbled on a "wheatie patch", and couldn't leave. The dates of the wheats were highly assorted...many teens, 20's; lots of 40's/50's. The one day wheat total is a record for me, and I got to share it with two of my hunting buds, Mike(ratman) and Jon(Goldenapples). I'll let them chime if they want to tell you what their wheatie/silver ratios were yesterday.

So, don't get too discouraged when you have a day where it seems all you're digging is wheaties...silver should be there too....it should; I promise. ;)

The other 2 IH's ('91, '99) and 1 merc were dug on a previous trip to this same park. The really crusty merc was dug at my local park on Sat. morn.

Thanks for looking,
HH,

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

Yo, Dan, you are still kicking some serious arse in those SoCal parks. Man, I have never heard of anyone finding so many silver coins in one year. You are just right around the corner from 600, man!

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

Thats a whole lotta wheat. I haven't found many more than that all year. Good to see you got a few semi key dates.

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

I wish the old parks around here would give 'em up like that! Nice finds.

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

That's a ton Dan...but it's better than 50 clad pennies ;D
Most of the sites I hunt I'm pretty happy to find wheaties. At your site where you found all these...you know there must be some silver hidin' in there somewhere. I bet you pop some more out before your done there.
Anyway...nice job...and that's a lot of diggin'

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

Some days are 10 to 1 , some are 1 to 10, it all seems to equal out in the end.
Sounds like a hard day of digging but rewarding none the less, congrats on all the nice digs Dan!! Thanks for sharing. You're an inspiration every post!

:)

Leon,

It was a button of some sort....I have no idea what it's from (Olympic torch?)...sounded like a deep silver to me.

Damn, Dan, even on your so-called "bad" days, you do better than most dudes. You are the king of all park excavations!

You are so good at what you do, you never get skunked. I don't think that SE can get skunked. hahaha

Keep making KirkPA proud!

Hey, thanks a lot Bryce. I was constantly on one knee digging those wheaties yesterday. The area was about 60' x 40'. Average depth: around 6". The ground was a hard-pack crumbly clay. It took a lot of effort to cut the initial plug with my Leche. Digging the clay/dirt out was no easier.

Hang in there with your illness...I was out all last week...only hunted once last week after my Iowa trip. Good luck on your next outing.

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

great day Captn ! you always have a great post , congrats ;)

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

At least you got some good dates out of all those wheats. The thing about wheats is that the next signal could be silver; what a strange situation you had. I remember as a kid having penny hunts at picnics and such; maybe you ran into one of them.

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

The silver has to be there...sooo many wheats is a great sign, now once you clear those wheaties, maybe the silver will start popping up in greater numbers!!

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

Dan that was a crazy day, in just that small area nearly 70 Wheats saved by the three of us 50 by you of cause 8) I was looking at some more old photo's and that area was heavily used in the early 1900's people waiting for or watching the boats, so im thinking there must have been a penny show or stall there for the kids???? but your right where was the Silver???

Re: "Momma Said"...50 Wheatie Day!

I ahve to laugh at what is disappointing to one detectorist is a GREAT day for others.....it's all relative I suppose...

The "button" is actually a circa WWI collar insignia denoting the training corps. It was the forerunner of ROTC. A neat find. I have one just like it from an old military dump.

I feel for you on the wheatie to silver ratio. You know what to do .

Thanks for the bit on info on that WWI collar insignia. I'm happy to have found it, and it wasn't another wheatie.. ;D
