Mojo's story. Updated with PHOTO'S. Newbie to Pro

I am new to this site. The reason I discovered it is that I am in search of an answer. What gives?

I have been coin roll hunting for a couple of years now and came across coinroll hunting on a whim. I have been a novice coin collector since I was 7 yrs. old just picking coins out of my pocket change.

Nearly 3 years ago I was making a deposit at my bank and noticed a couple of 1/2 dollar coins in the tellers tray and asked if she was willing to sell them to me, and she said oh yeah please take them all I'm tired of counting them. as a matter of fact I've got $110 worth in my vault you can have all of them too if you want, and I thought about it for a second and agreed to purchase the whole lot not really knowing what I was looking for, just knew I hadn't seen them around very much.

When I got home me and my kids went through them and I found my first Franklin 1/2 in mint condition I might add. :o 1953 d. the only silver coin in the lot. :( but I still remember how excited I was. What a rush. I couldn't believe it.

I ran out the next day and bought The red book and determined the value to be around $16. Wow I just made $15.50 I thought that was awesome. I need a plan.
First I gotta get rid of $109.50 in half dollars. I can't take them back to the bank where I got them from I thought because the teller pretty much let me know that she did not want to see them again. So for the next week I paid for everything in half dollars. :D Gas, Pizza, Cigarettes Etc. man you should have seen the reaction. The kids at the pizza joint couldn't wait to buy them out of the drawer :P The foreign guy at the gas station didn't know what they were. :o ??? LOL

Well the next time I go to the bank they didn't have any more so what was I to do??? after leaving that bank I realized that there are lots of banks. So I tried my luck at another bank and this time a teller had a hand full and I got a couple of %40 and a %90 out of less than $20.

So that's how it all started for me. It took about 6 months for me to perfect my strategy. I learned something knew with every visit and every bank I visited. Like

Tellers really hate 1/2 dollar and dollar coins
Most young ones don't know anything about silver coins.
The older ones save them for themselves.
Most are happy to get rid of them.
Almost all C.U.'s require an account to exchange cash
Most banks would like for you to open an account to buy coins from them.
Brinks has an automated coin rolling & packaging system. no one See's the coins. We like that.
Map quest will show you where every bank is everywhere.
Tellers will call you if you give them your number. As long as your nice. This has been lucrative.

So know I have about a dozen Bank account's. I got a lot of free gifts. And I haven't had to roll my halves and put my account number on the rolls anymore cause I found a bank with a change counter. WEW. No charge if you maintain an account.

Now I'm rolling. My first brinks box Yielded at lest a dozen %40's so this is gonna work. No driving around cold calling wasting time wasting gas . Just order a box and have a standing order with several banks / branches and have a dozen dump branches. I pick them up on my way home from work , spend about an hour going through them and dump them by 6pm.

About a month into my perfected system I hit the Mother load. Over 200 silver halves mostly Walking Liberty's and Franklin's I pretty much rounded out my collection and filled my books that day. That was 2 years ago.

After that day I was hooked beyond belief. I order boxes from several banks a week. Nearly 12,000 coins + cold calling when I wasn't scheduled for a pickup. I gotta believe I have sifted through nearly a million dollars in halves. ("I got blisters on my fingers") I have since had some nice boxes and nice hits on cold calls. but never like that again. I was averaging 7 to 20 keepers per box with an occasional Skunk.

I have probably recovered $2000 in Ike dollars cold calling and found only 3 silver Ike's and about 2 dozen Morgan and Peace dollars mostly on 2 separate occasions. I have a single source for dumping my Ike's, and they are happy about it cause word got out that they get them, and people are waiting in line for my deposits. On two occasions while cold calling I asked for the large dollar coins and I was directed to go to the branch where I dump them. LOL.

I got a hell of a lot of oddball coins and foreign coins some of which are silver. (another story for another day)

But Now!!!! for the last 3 months I am getting Skunked. on all fronts. If I get 1 to 5 keepers per box I consider myself lucky. Spending 6 to 8 hours a week or more and only coming up with a handfull of keepers a week is not very good. And not Worth the Time and effort.

So what gives? I know there is a ton of people doing this. I talk to them in the dump line every week and none of us is having any luck. Have we sifted through all the boxes in the reserve? and only catching what little is trickling in now??? Any Clues?

I for one have been cashing in everytime I get around 10 to 20 rolls of junk silver or whenever it's above $12. I couldn't afford to hoard that much.

Thanks, looking forward to your responces. Mojo the coin roll hunter.

"UPDATE" ......I found a way to upload my cell phone photo's of the "FATEFUL DAY" here they are.

Mojo. I have a very similar story to you. Read the Jackson Metals story. Perhaps you are too close. We are all experiencing similar circumstances. I'm just thankfull I started doing this years ago. It's been a wonderful ride. Good luck to you.

Re: Mojo's story. Trouble in Michigan. Stick a fork in it. Newbie to Pro

Trouble in Michigan alright lol,

I got into box searching really late in the game. I started box searching last July. I too have been collecting since I was a kid. Before that the only way I was able to get silver was to dig it up using my metal detector.

I was getting two boxes a week from my bank and up until Christmas my boxes were all or nearly all stamped 2004. The later boxes came in with dates of 2006. Never a 2005 box. Now they are all from 2007.

I searched two June 2007 boxes last week and got my very first true skunk box, the other box had two 40%’s in it. I had gotten two silver-less boxes before but each of them at least had a NIFC or proof coin so they were not total skunks.

If the coin sorting places do start to yank out the silver I think they will be cutting off their nose to spite their face. The boxes will really start to pile up somewhere. If I know that all of the silver is being pulled before I get to a box, I sure as heck will not be going to the trouble of getting any more. I think others will do the same. Only time will tell.

Like others have said, it’s been a fun ride. But I am not ready to get off of the roller coaster yet.

Happy Hunting

The last box we got was dated Feb. 12,2008. It had 2 90's and 44 of the 40's in it. Date doesn't matter unless it's 1964 or earlier to me.

Man I gotta say you guys are lucky (or smart) I got into the silver thing in Dec '06 and tried crh with a box of quarters and got skunked, I just got into it within the last month as a regular searcher (on halves)...got a grands worth today and found 1-90% (52 Ben) and a '67 thats it for 2 boxes...found the same amount in a hand roll yesterday ('cept 2-90%)...I just wish I'd have been as diligent with my silver hoarding as you folks...look at the 35 mile thread ,they are still out there ,but not like the good ole days I guess...still wanting a "dream Box"...Ill keep searching! Congrats to all you long timers!

Re: Mojo's story. Trouble in Michigan. Stick a fork in it. Newbie to Pro

I hunt in lower MI and have found the same thing, fed boxes don't produce and Brinks are only marginally better. I am glad to see there are other Mi hunters here. I was at TCF a few weeks ago making a dimes dump and all the tellers were talking about some crazy lady who came in with 8-10 boxes and filled the machine twice and then left empty boxes behind. I guess that means 4 people are hunting in the state now :)

Had some good luck cold calling in Ann Arbor and Yipsi last year. bought up about $3k over the course of a fri afternoon. came away with nearly $90 face in assorten silver halfs. must of hit 50 banks that day.
It was a good long day. been back on a couple occasions in the last year but not much luck the last time. Ended up buying mostly other crh dumps. most of the tellers kept saying I just missed them. looks like you beat me to the punch. lol Go Blue. maybe i'll try Lansing next.

Re: Mojo's story. Trouble in Michigan. Stick a fork in it. Newbie to Pro

I feel the pain my brethren. I scooped a whopping 3-40%ers out of the last 28 boxes. I think I need some re-training to recognize a 90%er.

Re: Mojo's story. Trouble in Michigan. Stick a fork in it. Newbie to Pro

A couple of weeks ago I was not able to get my normal two boxes from my bank so I did a bit of bank hopping on a Saturday morning. I thought that maybe the Lansing banks would produce something. No such luck. I kind of realized after going to two different banks across town from each other and getting hand rolls with the same "CDH" initials that (possibly) someone had been using them for dumps.

I actually drove to Toledo on a day off and discovered a CRH there. After a night of preparation on mapquest and 1 hour drive South at 7AM I began systematically going bank to bank and started noticing the rolls marked with a B type symbol at about my 10th stop another bank and $100 of hand rolled halves all marked with the same B marking, so I asked the teller if she knew something about the symbol. She certainly did. "it was Mr so and so and stops by every couple of weeks looking for half dollar coins. I think he's looking for silver" WA WA Wah....

Well needless to say I was outta there. I did however manage to pick up a few keepers but it was pretty clear I was in someone Else's territory.

In true coin roll hunting form I headed home and hit every bank on my way. Took me 6 hours and 3
dumps to get back home.. :) and a worthwhile return trip to Flat Rock the next week.

Re: Mojo's story. Trouble in Michigan. Stick a fork in it. Newbie to Pro

I just started the end of Nov 07. I started with two boxes a week then went to ten after Christmas. In Jan I went up to about 30 boxes a week and ended up doing about 96 boxes in the month of Jan. To date I have gone through about 226 boxes. I have over one full box of 90%. Two books of Bens with a folder of 80 bens. About 45 Walkers but no Barbers. And 10 rolls of 64s. I have 82 proof coins and 4 SLC. I am getting sick and tired of looking at JFK. I just finished 44 boxes this week alone with almost 1/2 being skunks. Only two were dream boxes and a box with a lot of proofs. I get a real charge out of finding a box with a lot of silver in it. I have bought 4 $1000 bags of Ikes and have slowly weeding through them. I have sold some and traded with a dealer to get silver coins. I have found four silver Ikes and two silver proof Ikes. I just picked up a bag of Ikes that I have not gone through yet. I have sold some of my Ikes for $2 each and some for $4 each. I am not ready to give up yet but I am not happy that now all of a sudden my bank wants to charge me to order boxes for me. I need to know which banks are you guys having luck with ordering for you without fees.

Thanks
Cat

Sorry about the typo that is one full box of 40%

Re: Mojo's story. Trouble in Michigan. Stick a fork in it. Newbie to Pro

Not bad Mojo,

I don't think we will ever get all of the silver, however the margins and keepers per box ratio continues to decline. Around here alot of the engineering guys CRH socially and enjoy a conversation and pizza while hand searching or loading coins into our machine. I would say that on average we do 15k per week and average about 1-2 40%s per box. As of the past few months things have really began to dip and quarters seem to be producing best, halves are almost pointless to search.

Re: Mojo's story. Trouble in Michigan. Stick a fork in it. Newbie to Pro

Cat you are insane LOL

30 boxes a week Wow. I thought I was bad. I do between 6 and 12 a week I figure I spend roughly an hour a box in effort. That includes pick up and dumping. You Know if I have to make a special trip to pick up it's around 25 minutes of drive and bank time. 30 min. to do a single box of 500 quick search. 10 minutes to drive and 10 minutes to dump 10 to return home. total about 1 1/2 hour. So I optimize by picking up and dumping three boxes at a time. and total turnaround for 3 is around 2 1/2 hours. anymore than 3 would mean extra trips back out to the car ( just to heavy) and I would have to carry more cash.

I rarely dump more than $1500 at a time that's 75 lbs. if I could pick up 10 boxes at a time that might actually save on pickup time but I'd have to have more working capitol. But I still would not dump more than say 2k per dump. It's too bad i can't get brinks to deliver to my house. I would definitely set up shop. i would do $20k a week working about 40 hrs. LOL Waddaya think.

Re: Mojo's story. Trouble in Michigan. Stick a fork in it. Newbie to Pro

You know I was thinking the same thing. I was actually considering calling Brinks tomorrow.... LOL I am sure they would laugh at me.

I drive 30min to one of my banks and pick up ten boxes on Tuesday. Dump those on Wed then pick up ten boxes on Wed. Dump them on Thursday and then some times pick up twenty boxes on thursday. One of my thursday banks is not real dependable on getting ten boxes. Some times she gets four and sometimes she gets ten. I don't complain I just take what she gets me.

My new dump bank is a dream they come out to my car and bring a dolly and take the coins out of my car for me and I was using the counter myself now they take it to the back because it is much faster.

And that is not counting the odds and ends I pick up inbetween.

I can go through ten boxes in one evening if I stay off the computer. I finished up my boxes this morning then spent the rest of the day organizing everything. Put all my Florida finds in slabs and booked them. Now I have nothing to do until Thursday because my Tuesday bank did not order for me. But I just found an bank with $900 in fed rolls so I will pick them up on Monday. I might do a few cold calls on my way. I figured I made around 4 to 500 riding in the car coming back from Florida just with the 11 boxes I picked up there. Now a bad way to spend your time while boarded riding in the car.

I am planning a trip this spring to AR to look for Diamonds. Anyone want to go? We can get together and have a face to face CHR meeting to pass around memos.... LOL

I think you may be able to get Brinks to deliver to your house....but you will have to pay the delivery fee (which probably makes it not worth it). You also may get some attention from people you don't want to notice your hobby with an armored truck dropping off a pallet of half dollars at your house. If your house is like most, it is likely less secure than a bank.

I do mainly small denomination stuff because almost every box of half dollars I order is either all 2000-P or presearched (different banks = different results). So I usually only do halves when my typ. stops coin machine bags fill up or when I do road trips. This year I am already over 500,000 coins searched. Last year I was just short of 2,000,000. My 2007 summary got moved to:
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,133198.0.html

My maximum dump for volume has been around $500 - $600 all in pennies. For value it was around $3100. When I have larger than usual dumps I drive a little out of my way and stop by a branch that I don't frequent.

Brinks can not deliver to a residence only to a business.

Re: Mojo's story. Updated with PHOTO'S. Newbie to Pro

Hey Cat

After seeing some of the recent finds like LJ's and silver foxes total's for the year, I'd say it's time to go into business. Get a office or something in a office building or court set up some folding tables and hire some minimum wagers to unwrap them have brinks deliver and pick them up.

BAM your in the money. I'll bet 5 people 8 hours a day can go through 50k a day easy. 100 boxes say with a gross return. of 2 40% & 1 90% per box (Conservative estimate) and a 1/100 chance of a dream box. a day your looking at 200-40's and 100-90's (who knows what a sporadic dream box might bring) and your looking at 200 x 2.00= $400.00 and 100 x 5.00 = $500.00 total gross $900.00 per day
- $150 in cost for the coins - employee pay Approx. $280 = $430.00 total from $900.00 = $470
Multiply that x 20 working days = $9400.00 a month gross
Take out $600 to $1000 for rent + shipping and handling ins lets say another $1000 looks like a $7400.00 dollar a month profit.!!!!!!??????......................When do you want to start?
