O.K. folks, I know this is a bullet! But is it modern or older? I found it in a field where I have been finding several CW era bullets. This area was possibly used as a camp area for some time by the Union Army. This bullet is obviously a pistol round, and does not appear to have been fired. But all the older lead bullets come out of the ground white in color, and this is still grey. Anybody know what type round this is?

Re: Modern or not?

I think it's gonna be CW. I will try and find my book. The missing patina could be due to several factors, dirt composition, use of fertilizer even the kind of tree it was under...d2

Re: Modern or not?

What was the type soil that you brought this out of? Clay or dirt? Also, was it in water? Manganese will coat objects a dark/black color.

Yes, the base is solid and fairly flat.

I dug it out of hard dirt. No clay in the area, and not in water.

I appreciate your help on this, guys.

Re: Modern or not?

The bullet looks to be a CW era colt. The patina may be missing on it from water, reaction from the black powder, etc. Look in the groves and see if there any crimp marks. If so it is post CW, if not then you are still in the running.

Are you sure it's lead? Is it possible that it could be some kind of alloy?

Looks like a Colt revolver bullet as others have said. I've dug several bullets in the area that don't have the oxidation on them. Based on your other finds, I'd definitely say CW period.

I can't believe I left you anything down there >:( LOL ;D

Re: Modern or not?

I've gotta concur with the others and say it's either a .31 or .36 Colt revolver bullet. Although pure lead generally turns white over time, any additional alloying (tin for one) will alter this process, as well as soil conditions.

Re: Modern or not?

I would say most likely its a black powder type CW era revolver pistol bullet ( being you have found several other CW era bullets in the area makes it highly possible the area was a skirmish or battle site)---from looking at the photo-- I'd say 31 (32 cal) to as big as a 36 cal colt type----you'll have to measure it to be sure of size -- looks like a "drop" or unfired one --- lack of whitish coating (oxidation --can be dre to many differant soil factors) --sweet find -- congrats --- Ivan

Re: Modern or not?

Hi KYCanine
I find these here in VA from time to time. I say it is Civil War, 44 cal Hazard. The white off-white color is what happens to most but not all bullets. Great find! I would continue to search that area and dig up every signal you get. My buddies and I have been searching a wooded area for the past three years and now have almost 400 bullets, 50 buttons, a dozen coins plus lots of other artifacts.

See if you can Id it in this database

I think it has been posted numerous time here

http://www.baymediapro.com/collection/bulletsearch.htm

Click on the bullet database.... this is limited to CW bullets only, so if not there not CW.

I found it there, ghost_rider. It is a Colt pattern for Navy Revolver. The size matches exact. Diameter is .372 and length is .507. Thanks for your help, everyone. ;D
