Modern (?) bullet question..Where's the lead? - Shed lead common

Hi all,

I had a chance to get out for a little while today and found a funky bullet. I am guessing that it is a .243 caliber bullet as the circular part on the outside measures .242 inches. The hollow opening on the inside measures .199 inches. Here is my question. I have found several bullets in this area, and most are similar with one exception, they all have lead. Is it common to find the jacket without the lead? When I picked this up, I checked the dirt and couldn't find ANY signs of lead anywhere. Any feedback or info as to why there isn't any lead will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

Your lead kept on going. Get back out there! :laughing9:

I've dug a lot of lead out from the back of targets (you don't need a detector to do that), and that's a common occurrence.

Better quality bullets tend to stay together more.

When they hit something hard enough to cause them to mushroom but still go all the way through such as a piece of plywood with a target attatched they will do that. Very common to find just about anywhere people go to target shoot.

or.........

the bullet after being shot somehow ended up in a fire.

the lead melted and ran out and left the copper / steel jacket behind.

it looks like its been hot to me.

could even be intentional if someone was trying to reclaim the lead

from fired bullets. hope they didn't breath the fumes.

It's common to shed their jacket.

Green check this as a common thing that happens. I don't personally know a lot about shooting and this is the first one without the lead that I have found. Thanks for all of the answers.
