French, 4th Regiment, birdcage shaft design, great find. Not sure if Rev War or not, but there was a 4th Regiment prior to 1779 when they became the 8th Regiment.

I am not sure, do not have enough data but I did see that during the Civil War there was a French 4th Infantry Regiment in the Louisiana region......... Still looking............

I might lean more towards the Civil War, but since I cannot find the age reference for that style shank, I can't say for certain, either Rev War or Civil War.

Here is a link on Civil War for French 4th Regiment, but really need to know the buttons age by the shank and just don't know, maybe Crusader or PBK have reference, I m reference out for the night. :)

OK, made one last look, 1830's for that style shank so most likely from the Civil War.... Tice's book has the birdcage style evolving from the Turret style around 1830 and I believe the Rev War buttons were flatties so perhaps that link I gave above about the 4th Regiment in Louisiana is the source of your button.

Wow Nana, great find! That button shank reminded me of an old button I found in FL and never ID'd. You never cease to amaze me with your finds. Keep going girl!

As noted, it's a button of the 4th Regiment, French Infantry (Armée de Terre - Troupes à Pieds - Infanterie de Ligne).

Domed/convex buttons with a birdcage shank typically date c. 1850-70 (and sometimes later). The earlier French Army buttons with birdcage shanks are flat.

Here's a page that might help with ID's of other French buttons:

How cool, Nana! It might be fun to research if any Louisiana units were ever based in Alabama during "the war."

And all the research everyone has done, is just as impressive. Wow to it all,

PBK, that button link helped me ID my FL button. It's a Infirmiers Militaires 1875 - 1914. Haven't a clue where I put it but here's a couple of old pictures. Thank you
