Try backing off the sensitivity. Mine will do that, but only when I have it set too high. When I hit the sensitivity (minus) once or twice it always calms down.
In my case, nothing wrong with the pinpointer, it's just like a metal detector you run too hot (sensitive), it gets a little chatty.

Just like the Garrett .. So now i guess the Garrett and Minelab people will have to get the …. X Pointer ...

Bothe the Garretts I have had will do that, especially on a hot day for some reason. Turning a pinpointer off and then back off solves the problem.

I found n old post over at minelabowners.com that said, only use Energizer Batteries. They specifically said no Duracells because of 10% defect rate. So I replaced the cheap battery I used with an Energizer. After 4 hours of use, no issues. There could be something to it.

And it acted up again today... Might have been the heat. 91F.

Ok... I figured something out. With the battery cap screwed down tight, I can lightly press on the tip, it goes off. If I back off the cap a turn, it takes much more pressure to get it to go off. I need to find an O-ring to hold that gap. I'm surprised ML hasn't figured this out.

My Pro-pointer will begin chirping erratically too at times. Looks like ML has a design flaw. I'll try backing down the sensitivity next time. Whatever the cause it is a pain when it starts acting up while you're looking for your target. Shutting off/on works sometimes.

I've tried using older 9V rechargeable batteries that don't carry a full voltage - and the Pro-pointer will work for a bit and then shut down. Turn on again it will run for 30 secs and then shut down again. It is very sensitive to voltage which could be the problem - hot days may drain the battery and drop the voltage just a tad, causing the chirping, drop a little more and it shuts off.
