According to my copy of "Fighting Aircraft of WWII" it is close to a Mitsubishi G4M "Betty"

Charlie nailed it. A Betty...the Japanese go-to bomber in WWII.

on a historical side note, this painting is a depiction of the air battle in which an American P38 downed the Japanese 'Betty' bomber (323 on the tail) in which Admiral Yamamoto was being transported which resulted in his death after American code breakers had intercepted a radio transmission of his flight plans

Wow !

This thread is an example of why I love the "treasure hunt", and why I appreciate this forum so much.

Something so simple as a die cast toy is found, and the knowledge and abilities of the folks here coupled with the modern internet, and we are able to learn the dates and details with ties that actually affected nations, societies, and our own personal lives.

One of my uninteresting finds, a token, suddenly became inspiring to me, when I was able to learn that it was actually made from the actual copper from the original Statue of Liberty.

That's the real treasure, imho ... the mundane becomes pertinent.

Way to go, guys !
