Yup - 'tis real - a MO Sales Tax Token. See http://www.geocities.com/whistlestopstudio/whatis.htm for some general sales tax token info. Per Jerry Schimmel's US State-Issued Sales Tax Tokens booklet, that variety was the first of the MO tokens - 1935-36. Probably the state hired an outfit that made milk bottle tops as an expedient way to get tokens into circulation after the law was passed authorizing them. Later MO tax tokens were zinc and then plastic.

I almost bought one the other day from a coin shop that wanted $2.50 for it in MINT condition. I have found a lot of the Zinc tokens but none in very good shape. Came across a plastic token while doing computer work for someone and talked him out of one for a friend here on TNet.

Nice!

Here's a quote from the link below.

In August Missouri issued it’s Milk-Cap tokens (called this because they resembled a milk cap and were produced in Kansas City by a prominent milk bottle cap manufacturer.

I remember my grandmother having a bunch of old papertax tokens or "mills" as she called them. She got them during WWII. Monty
