There is a N. D. Story, sounds similar. Then the Black Hills has a tale of evidence of miners working the region before excepted history.
 

Imagine - hundreds of years ago - exploring the frontier. What a sight it must have been to have been following a game around the mountain, turn the corner, and see a dry stream bed full of gold nuggets stretching off into the distance.
 

Or, turn around a corner, and see a tribe of angry indians looking for white men to kill.
 

Anyone near this should look into this IMO.
