What you see is what you get, trouble is, my eyes just make anything out on this.

Educated guesses are welcomed.

I dug this coin up a while ago and have just never been able to figure out what it may have once been. Pretty roached now. But, maybe someone can guess from it's size?

It's about the size of a large cent, seems thicker though. Weighs in at 23.87 grams. Slight appearance of some sort of rim/band around the coin. The two pics at the bottom are of the other side, if that helps.

Your mission, if you choose to accept, what the heck is this!? ;)

Sorry about the pics, I did about as good as I could but open to suggestions. :dontknow:

Thanks!

HH!

British Cartwheel Penny. (George III -1797)

I assume a little bigger than a large cent.

That's as good a guess as I could hope for and yep a large cent is about 1-1/8 inches, this coin is about 1-3/8 inches.

What gives it away? The weight? The band?

Thanks!

Combination of the raised rim, the size & thickness, and seated Britannia. (1 3/8 is exactly right) There's really no other possibilities so it's not a guess.

Works for me.

But, where did you see a "seated" ANYTHING!?! Must be better eyes than me! LOL That's not saying much either. :)

Thank you!

I don't have great eyes, but can pick up detail well in pictures because I buy a lot of coins online and have done so for many years.. Maybe in looking person you can say for sure. Obviously with the surface problems it distorts the image so you sort of have to use your imagination.

But even without seeing Britannia it's almost certainly a Cartwheel penny. The only other similar coins are from the Isle of Man, and maybe a few British penny tokens, but chances are they would not match in size, and would not be near as likely to find.

Like I say, good nuff for me! :)

That would make this the oldest coin I've found. I figured it might be colonial but was never sure. There aren't too many coins this size, with the few hints of detail it does show. Shame I couldn't bring more detail out, but, I suppose they're gone.

Very good eye!

Thanks again!

It's lucky that's what it is, because there's really no other coin that I can think of that can be ID'ed in such poor condition. I've probably owned over 100 of these so it's something I've seen a lot of both online and in person. I've probably dug a dozen or so too.
