Misshapen Copper - bullet?

Found this on the side of a country lane that has been in use since just after the Revolution. It is about 1 inch in diameter. Has the green coating of aged copper.

I thought maybe it was a flattened or melted bullet? But I showed it to an archaeology professor who said it was not -though he didn't know what it was.

It is heavy for it's size and solid.
