Was having a b-day cookout for my daughter today in my home in CT.While working the grill and keeping everyone happy i noticed a couple guys weed wacking the cemetary right across the street from my house. But then i thought for a second, the usual guys don't do that on sundays, and how come i don't hear weedwacker motors. They were fellow MD'ers!!And i noticed them stopping and bending down a few times.Musta found somethin.I wanted to head over and shoot the breeze with them and make some new friends, but i had so much cooking and stuff to do i never got the chance. So i'm wondering, was anyone from here md'ing in Stering (Oneco) CT today and did i miss a chance to meet you?If so let me know,i know a ton about the area and would be happy to give ya any helpful info,also---the good stuff is further in the back on the other side of the wall, but how i know that is a story for another time.lol

MDing a cemetary? Is that an ethical thing to do? I could understand MDing the surrounding grounds (with permission) but it seems that the immediate cemetary plot areas should be respected. What do you think?

Rabajohn... I've been wrestling with that concept, too. It make sense that many old cemetaries have had tons of visitors over the years and they were bound to leave some stuff behind... but I just can't get myself to actually enter the areas where there are gravestones/markers. One particlularly juicy one comes to mind near my work; it's very old - but still accepts new burials. Perhaps that's part of my reluctance. I haven't entered the cemetary, however, I have detected the outlying areas; parking lots, entrance walk, etc. I guess it's up to the individual as to how much reverence he/she puts on the resting places of others.

I agree with SaintSea and SWR! I beleive it has the potential to severely damage the metal detecting hobby as well. I was given permission to MD the Scottsville, Texas cemetary a few years ago. It is a well known historical cemetary. I was told not to enter the gated area where the plots were. It was not necessary for him to tell me that because I had already thought the same thing in my mind. To respect the deceased. I did not MD the chapel building either as it was inside the gated area. I discovered some neat finds in the park-like areas around the cemetary. Enough to satisfy me hobby-wise. Yes, Ruth! It is an individual thing but I just pray this hobby has enough respectful and moral individuals to keep us acceptable to others. If those two guys were in fact MDing in the plot area, I hope they get a midnight visit by some chain rattling ghosts! "Give.. me.. my.. R.I.N.G!"

The only way I would TH in a cemetary is if the caretaker asked me to help him find something that was lost. I just wouldn't be comfortable otherwise. Many, if not most of the things you would find there are apt to be placed there on purpose and to tote it off would be disrespectful at least and probably theft. No, that's not for me. I'm sure you didn't aim for the post to go this way but it is a natural turn of events. Perhaps the THers were there for a legitimate reason, who knows? JIM

I was in capecod at a yard sale one time and an old man said that a guy was walking through a cemetary and found a gold coin and got to keep it, but if you found a gold coin laying on top of the ground wouldnt you think it was placed there by a family?? I have metal detected on the side of the road outside of a cemetary but i dont think i could ever go in one....just doesnt seem right....

I would have to agree, bad for the hobby's image and besides, we have enough places to check. Detecting in a cemetary goes over the line unless it was requested like Jimmileo mentioned.

I agree with everyone here.I live right across the street from this very old cemetary, which stills see's burials now and then.I've thought about all the things that may have been dropped there, but always considered it in bad taste to md there.I didn't think it to be illegal though, had i thought that i would have called the police.I did think it was in bad taste and would never do it myself.I have searched on the outer grounds on the other side of the wall to the cemetary.I hope no one got the impression i myself would do that.I wish i had thought about it more and done something when i saw it.I was just excited to of seen other people in the hobby and had so much going on i didn't give it much thought at the time. Now that i know what i know,i'm glad i didn't go and introduce myself, not the kind i want to enjoy the hobby with if they don't consider a place like that to be off limits.
And believe me,there are plenty of other area's around me that are far better to search and are just as old,no need to go into the graveyard.
Glad you guys gave your input, next time i see something like that i'll be sure to speak up,out of respect for the graves and to keep a good name for the hobby.I don't always think before i speak, but i always think before i act.

I would think digging around graves would really offend some people, I know I would'nt be happy about someone digging around my loved one's grave. Every one buried there has friends and relatives. Stictly Taboo!

I have thought about going to detect a very old cemetery near me for surface items, but then again I would'nt want someone digging
up my Mother and Fathers graves. I would think there would be alot of old coins and jewelery laying around. I say let them lay.
I dont want ghosts chasing me around. :o

I know of place in Michigan where a famous battle took place during the French and Indian wars. This spot is now a cemetary. I think I'll leave this one to someone else.

there were some posts a month or two ago by a guy who detected cemeteries ~ ???

I know of 9 very old ones that I would love to be able to hunt.
Unfortunately they are all anywhere from 130ft to 175ft under a lake.(Built in 1952)
I have GPS cordinates and some history on them.

Could have Jesse James caches in some of them!!!!!
