Today I stopped at one bank. I had tried this bank previously with no success. Today, however, I got a different teller and it was a slow day. I first asked if she/they had any half dollars. Second, I asked to buy the bag of halves from the coin counter, but they said they couldn't sell it unless it was full. I asked how full it was and if I could cash in some halves enough to fill the bag only to buy it back. She tried to figure it out, but couldn't. Since they were hesitant and being that it was not busy I asked if it was possible to just exchange half dollars for the ones I wanted in the coin bag. They discussed it amongst themselves for a few seconds and said sure. So I went out to the car and being optimistic grabbed 3 large handfuls of halves hoping for lotsa silver to trade for. She started going through a handful at a time and showing me the reeded edges. As I saw one I wanted, I would trade one of my rejects for the one I wanted. Ended up buying 12 total half dollars and 2 foreign coins I did not have yet.

2 - 90% Kennedy (1964, 1964-D)
10 - 40% Kennedy (1967(3), 1968-D(4), 1969-D(3))
1 Australia, 50 Cents (1983)
1 Ireland, Florin (1966)

There were about 10 other foreign coins that I passed on, most of them Mexican. I would have bought the 2 dollar Canadian coin since I would have just spent it the next time I was in Canada (at $0.50 its a 3X+ value) and also a Great Britain 2 Shilling coin from 1960 that I don't have. But both of those she had already put in the reject bag before I could say anything and they weren't worth the trouble to have her chase them.

Note: Its always nice when the teller's hands get dirty and yours stay clean when searching through coins.

Tried to buy a box of dimes and was going to test the waters with quarters, but the vault teller was not there. Ended up picking up 2 more Red Seal $2 bills from 1953 instead.

Great story Gman. With so many bad bank experiences being posted lately, it was encouraging to see a good one. Nice finds by the way as well.

I too have a good bank experience to share. Went to a bank I had been to once before; last month. One where I purchased two bags ($500 each) of loose halves, that had been returned by "a regular who looks through them and returns the ones he's not interested in". Knowing this, I don't know why I still bought the bags, and if you'll recall from an earlier post, they only had a single '64 in each.

This time, they said they had another $800 in loose halves. I went there, starting talking with the teller (it too was slow and it was the same teller as last month) and found out this "regular" does this all the time. She wasn't sure where he buys his halves, but he returns them all to that bank.

I commented that he was probably looking for the same type halves that I was, and it wouldn't make sense for me to buy and look through look through the $800 worth they had.

She than went into the vault and come out with four canvas bags of the aforementioned $800 worth.

She said, "let's look through some a see what we find" and proceeded to dump about $150 worth on the counter and we began to look.

Sure enough, we both quickly surmised, after that $150 and another $100 or so she dumped out next, that "the regular" and I were looking for the same thing and the two I found last time were just a couple he must have missed (somehow).

I thanked her for the time she took and help she offered, but will not likely be back; as that's where "some competition lies."

It was nice to see that genuine act of kindness, they never asked if I had an account there or not (I don't) and thought I should post this to show there are some great tellers out there as well; willing to help us in our quest.

I have encountered this only once and it took me by surprise. Way to go GMan.
Best Regards, Ray

do you just walk into a bank and ask for a bag? will the banks have a bag if they don't have a coin counter? i know banks have boxes but what about bags? do you have to order bags?

I ask something like the following:
Do you have any half dollars, either loose, rolled, or even out of the coin counting machine, if you can sell them to me from there?

Some banks won't, some banks will. Just kinda depends.
