These were found about 20m apart. Looks like a dropped .58 and a fired something smaller than a .58. Found in Giles Co., Va. where there are rumors a Confederate Cavalry camp was. This is all we found... and eight horse shoes.

It is a civil war era US Merrill .54-caliber carbine bullet ...and it is a fired one. To see what your bullet looked like before it was fired, go to the following webpage and look at the fourth version of Merrill Carbine bullet shown in the photos. (Click on the photo for a larger view, and information about the bullet.) http://www.baymediapro.com/collection/bullet_tt_list.asp

Thanks soooo much. As a normal coin shooter, dabbling into the CW stuff is very cool. I love the history of the war, but must admit relic hunting trips are few and far between. How do y'all reconcile finding possible CW artifacts in areas where there was no definitive CW activity? These two rounds were found on a farm that I suspect was a cavalry camp at one time. Problem is, these are the only CW related items I have found. There are rumors other things have been found over the years, however I have yet to physically see it.
