Re: minelab x-terra 50. which coil???

You should start out with the stock coil and switch to the smaller one when you run into a lot of trash. I don't have the photo's on this computer to show you the differences between the fields of the two coils so your going to have to look it up yourself unless someone has the photo's.

Re: minelab x-terra 50. which coil???

well, i know a smaller coil is good for trashy areas, but the higher freq, has to be a factor , is it better in iron infested ground? or worse than the stock coil? as they are both different freqs

Re: minelab x-terra 50. which coil???

I have an X-Terra 50 with the stock coil and also have the 6" coil like you have.
I use the small coil for old homesites and trashy areas like parks.
I actually don't use the stock coil very much since I purchased the 10.5" dd coil.
This coils stays on my detector 90% of the time... I just like how it responds to targets and you can cover alot of area with it too.
The 6" DD coil will detect deep for its size and and separates targets very well due to way the signal goes into the ground.
One thing to remember, you have to overlap your swings with both coils to assure you don't miss targets... most recommend about 50% with the concentric coil and about 25% with the DD coil.

i
found the answer i was looking for, here it is,
The High Frequency of 18.75kHz is suited to searching for smaller targets that would fall into the ‘difficult to detect’ category. These would generally be tiny thin targets and small jewellery made from various gold carat make-up, gold rings and in Europe, small thin low-conductive ancient objects and medieval silver coinage. However, there is a slight drawback using the higher frequency coil, as it can cause more ‘eddy current excitement’ in rusted iron objects
