FYI, There are little to no spare Minelab parts for the Explorer II, and very few parts on the Explorer XS so I would not invest a lot into them. The Explorer SE are still supported by Minelab..

TH is correct... when the older Explorers die you may have to consider it to be at the end of its service life. But - if you can get a working one cheap enough you can do a LOT with one.

The newer it is, the slightly faster it will be as compared to its predecessor. The coils also evolved a quite bit through the years- most but not all will say for the better.
