Minelab Sovereign - New user of it and I'm LOST!!!

I seriously need some help with this. It is the original Minelab Sovereign. I really don't understand how all of the settings work and what I should be doing to hunt deeper older coins in old parks. Today one friend found a 1903 barber dime at 8 inches and the other guy a 1944 wheatie and 12 inches. I couldn't find anything but junk. Yesterday I found plenty of money with my Ace 250.

PLEASE HELP!! haha, soooooooooooooooooooooo confused with all of the new gadgets!

Thanks
Brian

This forum has a section for Sovereign and Excal users -- The EX2 forum has a lot of great info on it -- figure the Sovereign must have some of the same.

HOW ORIGINAL ?
Name ALL the Knobs.

MOST LIKELY your 2 Problems are, Your Swinging too FAST.

WHEN YOU THINK your SWINGING SLOW enough, SLOW DOWN? ;)

and, Keep the COIL to the SOIL !

The SOVEREIGN HATES AIR.

DISC ---- ALL THE WAY COUNTERCLOCKWISE.
NOTCH ------ALL THE WAY COUNTERCLOCKWISE
VOLUME--- ALL THE WAY CLOCKWISE
SENSITIVITY --------ALL THE WAY COUNTERCLOCKWISE TILL IT CLICKS ON AUTO, till You Learn it 100%
THRESHOLD --12:00 Just audible

Jeff of pa is correct. Slow down and turn down the sens. and stick with it. Soon you will learn the machine and find more than your friends. But you have to learn the thing first. Your familiar with the Ace 250, but it is only 10% of what the Sovereign can do.

Re: Minelab Sovereign - New user of it and I'm LOST!!!

I have been giong about as slowly as I can go with this machine and the readings just flip back and forth with no real idenification of whats underneath the ground at all. I have tried ever imagineable setting in home tests and I never get the same results twice. I have a digital target meter with it and printouts of what other people have gotten with different #'s and their setups.

As for the air, I can get that is detecting something at about 10" or so on air tests, but it has no idea what it is getting, and I get the same results with it at 2" from the object.

Soooo confusing...

ANSWER:

Sounds like your meter is no good.
? Have you set the Meter to a quarter ?
IF it's an original meter there is a Knob on the back.
Lay a Quarter on the ground & while moving ovr the target Set the meter to 550.
IF it won't set your meter is bad.

ANSWER :

This is part of the reason , I say the Soverign hates air.
? The Sovereign analizes the object & the ground, to ID the target.
HOWEVER your Meter should be able to be set .

ANSWER :

YOU WILL , even when working right.
The sovereign dosn't show Depth in Any way.

IF your talking Meter Readings here too, Same thing , the Sovereign should Correctly ID a target, at it's maximum depth , as well as at 1"

? The Meter may have gotten WET at some point & needs Replacement, IF you like using a meter.

I think my first problem was bad batteries.... hopefully that is it... i will be taking everybody's advice after the battery pack is charged and see how the results go.

I have read a lot about the calibration and setup of this unit and I was just having no luck with real batteries. Luckily I woke up today and decided to recheck that shipping box and I found the rechargeable batteries.

Recharbles Are Definately Better in the Sovereign.

& yes the Firstthing to happe when the Batteries get low is ID Dosn't work as well.

& Eventually the TONE will get Real Loud & you Won't be able to turn it Down, till you Charge your Batteries.

Re: Minelab Sovereign - New user of it and I'm LOST!!!

I had the Minelab Excalibur and I understand that it's similar to the Sovereign.

The gentlemen above already answered all the technical questions for you.

I would also add that if you do need to have someone look at your machine, you should send it to? Minelab (US if you're in the US). You can find their website on the web. Email them and explain your problem before mailing your detector in.

They are awesome people and you are important to them. You never know, they may even give you a break on the repair cost if any repair is needed.

I sent my Minelab in just to make sure it was perfect before I sold it. They totally checked it out and called me. On the phone I was asked several detailed questions. They even replaced a part that had a small mark on it. Then they paid the return postage and the bill was zero.

You can't beat Minelab for service.

As for hunting, Minelabs are different. They are unlike all the other brands. They were designed for depth and to ignore trash iron. But one thing is sure, they were not made for speed.

I've already commented too much so just let me end with a question.

Would I buy another Minelab? The answer is no. While they are a good product, I now think there are other brands that are much better for MY TYPE OF HUNTING (mainly junk infested land hunting).

Excuse me but now I have to dodge bullets? ;D

Extra note: This is just my opinion BUT you may find the Minelab to be awesome once you learn it.
