Minelab SD2100V2 for Iron relics?

Dear VaRelics;
I'm sorry, but I only now saw your question, my friend and to answer it, my SD2100 generally goes deeper than I care to dig. It'll pick up a tin beer can at depths of up to 2 feet with an 18" round mono coil.

Also, a PI detector does not detect the total amount of the metal in the ground, it only detects the surface area of the object. in other words a garbage can lid lying on it's side can be detecting at a very extreme depth whereas on lying on it's edge would reduce the depth of the detector significantly. A cannon ball should be no problem at all for an SD211v2, my friend, even though it has a very smooth rounded surface.

Offhand, I'd say that an SD2100v2 with an 18" round mono coil you should be able to clearly and cleanly detect a small cannonball to a depth of at least 24 inches in lightly mineralized ground. My deepest find with my SD2100v2 thus far has been a burro shoe at 27" in highly mineralized ground. >:( This was also using an 18" round mono Coiltek coil. It was a fairly strong signal and it was disappointment. A backbreaking disappointment at that.

I had an SD2000 about 15 years ago and I found some deep targets with it. I'd say you'd have no problem hitting a cannonball with a 2100 up to 3'.

I bought a 2100 5 months, the first week I found a 36cal lead ball @ 12'' then a papper clip at 11''. just last week I was on a beach and found a capri sun drink thing standing straight up about 20'' with a 11''DD coil. So a cannon ball should be no problem but have a good digger with you!

How clean is the area of other iron where you will be looking for the balls? Having great depth is one thing, but if you are fooled by a ton of smaller iron then you will waste more of your time digging junk than looking. I never would have guessed it, but once I got really into wanting to find big iron I realized my explorer is a great tool for it. I can basically cherry pick the the high % iron hits and not be fooled by deep smaller stuff. Most of my older sites don't seem to have many large iron hits so it's great just digging a few, but knowing at the same time I'm not missing any because the sound for large iron is just too obvious. In the Fall I detected an undisturbed pasture and dug a 6 pounder at 3 feet... and it was definitely 3 feet. That's pretty good for a detector that's still using a small amount of discrimination. Had it been a large CW ball or shell who knows how deep it could have been. Even the 6 pounder was obvious, and I was pumped hearing the signal having been told just an hour before several balls were dug in the area. So I say depth is good, but time well spent is often better, and for a good iron getter you need both.
