My hunting partner Noah made an excellent discovery this week. He had a faulty old EX2 rechargeable battery pack for the Minelab explorer series, etrac ext. Took it to batteries plus. And had them build a new longer life battery pack for 34$
this article on our site. Is some GREAT info!! And a must read for you Minelab users.

Sure beats paying over a hundred bucks for a new one.

I am currently having my AA battery pack converted to an extra long life rechargeable battery pack. And they even have a battery charger that works with the packs for 40$. That charges them fully in 8 hours! So, i will post a whole new article on that soon.
So, keep checking out the site www.urbanarchaeology.org.

Have several new articles in the works. I am writing, and doing loads of research. its a small site. but growing. And will be loaded with more and more information.

Thanks for posting this.

I was curious about the innards of the stock battery pack, but had no good reason to open it up. The pack I have works well enough, but I find the self discharge rate of the Minelab packs to be annoying.

For my time and money I'd simply remove the Minelab battery pack, and if possible, glue the long cover back on but leave the "removable cover" loose and simply use AA cells in it: either 2000 mAh Eneloop or 2400 mAh Imedion batteries. Both of these batteries are low self discharge and provide much more time between charges than the Minelab pack. Currently I use the Maha Imedions.

Yes, changing out and upgrading the stock battery via Batteries Plus has been posted here many times......I replaced both my stock Excal batteries. :icon_thumright:

Looks like my idea of removing the stock battery back and replacing it with AA batteries won't work after all.

I pried the battery cover off of the slimpack only to find out that the battery pack does not have spring loaded contacts to hold the pack in place - ergo nothing to hold AA batteries in place.

Cool, was there any other good information about this topic? Gotta remember. Im still new to detecting as is my hunting partners. Noah being the newest. And I have had my Minelab only so long. So for me, this is helpful news. And I wanted to share it. But if there is other good info to an old post I wanna read it.
Keeping the word spread is good, one post or 20. This 34$ replacement VS over a hundred dollar replacement especially in these times is worth getting word out there.

Oh I know. Dont worry about anything. Never thought that. Was just saying, sometimes an update or repost on a good subject is a good idea. As older posts get lost in the giant library here. And that since I am new. I wanted to post it to help others get the info. And adding a link to an older post if you know where it is would be cool. So people can see other methods. Thats all.
Cheers.

This post was appreciated by me when I found myself in a similar situation.
