Here's a link to Minelab's support page. If you scroll down you can download the manual for the Sovereign 2a Pro. Should help you a lot.

Wave a silver quarter or half dollar under the coil and calibrate the meter to read 550 with the adjustment screw on the meter box. I'm assuming you have the older style that went that high.

OK! we found out on that and a manual is being sent.
do you use mine lab ?
if you have a good bit of exerance ...
do you think we make a good choice?

any others got some advice ?
tks dave

I use the Elite an love it. you make a good choice but you will have to give yourself pleany of time to learn the machine, it took me a few months to really get the hang of it, this was my first ever metal detector also. The machine will work just about anywhere, dirt, sand, wet sand , an knee deep saltwater, an goes deep. Also keep your swing speed a little on the slow side an you will get those deeper finds.

I do use a Minelab - a Musketeer Advantage. Saving up my pennies for a Sovereign GT at the moment. I have researched long and hard (which is why I knew the above tidbits) and, for my needs, style and preferences it seems to be one of the best choices. There are lots of very good detectors available from many producers.

Go to 'Find's Forums' at www.findmall.com . Someone there will be able to lead you to 'Andy Sabich's' books on the Soverign. I have a couple I would send you but I haven't seen them for......Since I switched to Exp.XS. Andy's books are about as good as it gets for Minelabs. Also go to www.sunray.com and look into their meter and probe.

Congratulations. Great detector. I have the XS 2a pro. It takes some getting used to. The response is really broad. At first for me a penny sounded like an aluminum can. The tones are a little hard to learn being a continuum intead of say 5 or six different tones. you will learn though to pick out the high coin tones and the nickels. One thing you will notice is the threshold will blank out when a target is discriminated out. It will still give an audio on targets when it is blanked out though and when the threshold comes back it will stay low to indicate iron or it will be higher so you can tell what was discriminated. On really deep targets all you will get is a threshold null and the threshold will come back high. These should be dug. Also on deep targets the tone will vary but there will be that high tone mixed in. If you move the coil back and forth (Sovereign wiggle) you will find the sweet spot and the tones will climb and the meter will climb and those are usually good targets. I have the 550 meter and copper pennies, dimes and nickels will read 549-550. Zink pennies and indian heads and some older wheat pennies will read 543. Make sure you calibrate the meter each hunt with a penny or quarter. It's easy for the knob to get bumped in travel. I like to run mine with disc. set at min., notch off and sens. at auto. You will get less nulling. Some places you'll almost never have a threshold because of lots of iron but the detector is still working. I had a hard time not stopping to wait for the threshold to return when I first started using mine. In trashy sites it like searching in silent search mode.

Here are two stories that stand out in my mind. Searching in a small town park. Got that faint signal with high tone mixed in. Did the wiggle and the tone and meter climbed and locked in on 543. I said that has to be an Indian Head being that deep. Sure enough. Indian at around 8". Another time I took it to the Ocean and it went straight from the dry sand into the water without a peep. I was impressed.

Good luck with your Sovereign.

Robb.
