“Million Vet March” On D.C. To Protest Obama Administration’s Attacks On Veterans
The first thing that the Obama administration did when the government shutdown began was to close the World War II Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Vietnam Wall. It did this knowing that (a) Honor Flights of World War II veterans were due to arrive; (b) that these memorials are open air parks that have never been under constant monitoring; and (c) that it would cost more to close them and guard the closure than it usually costs for the National Park Service to act as a caretaker (not an owner, a caretaker) for these sites.

When the aged vets stormed the barrycades at the World War II Memorial (see video above), the Park Service doubled down, threatening to arrest the men. It also (at great expense) strengthened the barricades. All of which makes you wonder – how dumb is the Obama administration to take on men trained in the art of war?

A new grassroots movement has emerged called the “Million Vet March.” Using the internet and social media such as Facebook, veterans are looking to organize. At their website — Million Vet March on the Memorials — the march’s organizers explain what the proposed march is all about:
We do not care what political leanings you may be; be it liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent or whatever. The actions of the U.S. government this week with regard to barricading and shutting down the World War II Memorial to veterans, that may or may not be on their last trip to Washington DC, is a despicable act of cowardice.
Veterans this week were unwillingly pitted as pawns in this crisis. We feel that this should never be the case. This is why we will go to Congress after the budget crisis and ask for a bill to be introduced that would prevent any member of the government from closing our memorials down to any American, except for maintenance purposes. In the meantime, we will have our March in Washington DC on October 13th! Our veterans deserve that!
You can also get more information at their Facebook page – Million Vet March on the Memorials – which already has almost 24,000 likes.

The plan is to stage the march on Sunday, October 13, at 9:00 a.m., with veterans assembling at the various war memorials in Washington D.C. and throughout the United States. If you can’t get to D.C. this weekend, you can participate in your own home town. Alert your local media, take pictures and videos, use social networking, etc. – in other words, if you’re a vet who doesn’t like being used as a pawn in a government fight, Sunday, October 13 is your day to let the government know how you feel.
