Hi folks. I found this on a hunt with member Whadifind last week and thought someone here could answer the question in the title. As you can see in the reverse picture, it is slightly larger than a Morgan dollar and embossed. I know the eagle and Federal shield have been used in many items so this may be yet another " your guess is as good as mine " find:dontknow:

I'm not sure but it reminds me of a late 19th C Hat Badge.

The triangular tab on the eagles right wing makes me think it was attached to a larger metal piece... maybe a buckle? This doesn't help directly in answering the military/civilian question, but just sort of brainstorming what it was attached to?

Somewhere along the line, I remember seeing something like this mounted on an old leather key fob.

That's what Gary ( Whadifind ) said when I first showed him too. Thanks!
Thanks!

That tab says it was definitely attached to something. Thank you.

I bet there were many things with the eagle and shield. Unfortunately it was a very popular design. Thank you.

Indeed, the popularity of it makes it tough. There is the small clue of the letter S that's under the eagle's left wing. I tried, with no success, to match it up with antique advertisments from one of the million "eagle brand" or just eagle logo companies.
