Greetings ! I am new posting here, but not a new visitor. I have been coming and learning new things here since I returned to metal detecting after a long hiatus.
I live in a VERY rich historical area. The town I live in was founded in the 1600's. It's been fun.
But as you all know, we seldom know what everything is that we find. here's my newest puzzle.
This is a small pc. about 5/8 military cap 01.jpgmilitary cap 02.jpg inch in diameter, and a little less than 3/8 inches deep with two small holes in the sides, to attach it to something.. It's brass with hints of gold gilt.
The eagle and shield look to be about 1812 to civil war era. The 13 stars seem to be spread out a little unusually.
I would love to know if anyone recognizes it. An end-cap? a lid" please help ...
Thanks for your wisdom in advance !

definite end cap... maybe flag pole... maybe cane or crop.... another member will know.

Hadn't thought about a flag.. but remember, it is very small. I thought it was a button, until I got it out of the hole and saw the sides.. Thanks for looking though.

I think it may be too small for a cane, but it would fit a crop.. because the stars don't look quite uniform, maybe it was specially made for the soldier. A lot of that was done in the civil war.
I'm hoping to find someone who has actually seen the same thing. I don't find that many military relics here.

I'm inclined to think you all have narrowed it down pretty well. I will wait for a few more posts before I mark it as solved, but , the Officer's crop or swagger stick ideas fit the pc.
The size is consistent, the design makes sense, since most officers had their uniforms specially made during that era.
I am excited too, because though I find a great deal of relics from early 1700's to present, this is only my third early to mid 1800's military relic. (not counting bullets and balls)
I have a brass percussion cap dispenser and the caps are still sliding inside it! and the top control of a powder flask, and now this.

Thanks for all the help. I had a feeling I could count on you all.

Another possibility may be a decorative part to a powder horn. 5/8" is smaller than a dime.

Oh man, I thought we had it.. that's a pretty good suggestion too.
I guess I need someone who has found one or see a museum pc. to know for sure...
It's a stumper ! and yes, it's pretty small.

I don't know what it is, but the eagle is definitely pre-civil war. More like an 1812 era style of eagle. Very interesting find!!

O.K. folks, Thanks for all the helpful input.
The more research I do online, the more I see that the great seal design was pretty set before even 1812. and this design precedes that. That doesn't mean all military
items carried it, there seems to have been a great deal of disparity in designs, esp. in different states carrying a federal design. I also noticed, much to my surprise, that this design
could have been used in the late 1700's ! This style eagle is def. an early design.
This puts me more in dark than I was as to date. But I still agree that it could only have very limited uses. the ones suggested being most probable.
Thanks again. I have several other relics I have found I have questions about. will post more prob. after the holidays.

Hi Davers, It's the same piece. It's some type of cap, which looks like a button from the top.
