Re: Military lapel pin

Can't really help you with an age or identity on your button, but would guess from the anchor, that it was probably Naval.

Nice find. WTG

marines were a part of the navy back then not a sperate group as much as today --so it could be marine --

Re: Military lapel pin

United States Marine Corps button/screw back... maybe a sleeve or collar brass thing... lemme look for a little more information... with no back mark of any type who knows?

Possibly mid 1850s or newer... you'll have to judge it against other finds in the area for an era.

USMC - Established: 1798, but I think the older buttons just had an "M" on the buttons... ??

Re: Military lapel pin

It a for the Service Cap, there were 2 of them, attached to the cap strap, called a cap screw.

Re: Military lapel pin

That's the same design as all buttons on the Marine dress coats. It looks like the button screw for the Marine Garrison Cover's chin strap. It is black on the Alfa uniform rather then the brass button shown. That White Garrison cover is for the Dress Blue Uniform. I know for fact the design was used as late as 1980 when I was mustered out but I believe it is still in service currently. The USMC was established in 1775 by act of Continental Congress not 1798 as previously stated. Marines initially were deployed as sharp shooters in the ships riggings to stop any uprisings from shanghaied or indentured sailors.Marines on deck would wear the Garrison Covers so as to not be mistaken for aggressors and felled by friendly fire. The Officers Garrison cover still has a rope 4 leaf clover on top to signify the traditional marking of the cover. Cover is the Marine's term for a hat if you don't know.
