I found this several years ago at an old grade school. I never searched the name, and don't know what branch of the military it may be (I suspect Airforce). Does anyone feel like a goose chase. I will return to family if any can be found.....NGE

U.S. Army Air Force, WW2 era. The Air Force as we know it today did not become a separate branch until after WW2. It's not military issue, but something a soldier or his family bought for him. You have his name and serial number, it should be easy to research his service records and track down any family.

Happened to have Ancestry.com open next to TreasureNet, so I looked him up. He may be the

Thornton Ankelein whose Last Residence was Northampton, Virginia, United States of America (Born: 21 Dec 1917, Died: Mar 1983).

Maybe born to Louis and Elizabeth Ankelein in New Jersey (Bogata Borough, Bergen County), older sister Ruth (b. 1910), younger brother George C. (c. 1928).

I'm only throwing this out in case you can't find him through the VA. The VA would be your best bet.
Good luck, I hope you find his relatives!!

Also found a Thornton L. Ankelein listed in Westland Michigan. His age is given as 93, which would be about right.

Just got to thinking--my dad's serial number started with AF xxxxxxxx , which meant regular air force as compared to reserves, maybe Nat. Guard, or whatever else. This guy appears to have been regular AAF. I don't know if that makes any difference where you look for his VA info.

I found this in Livonia, Michigan. In about 1997. Westland is not very far from there. The school has been torn down since then and is a park now. It was found behind where there used to be the backstop for a ball field, I found it with my Fisher 1266-X about 7 inches deep. Maybe he was a teacher there?......NGE

I found info on his obituary in the " Livonia Observer newspaper " sent request to them for email copy of the obit. May take 7 - 10 days to get a reply. When I do get copy, I may be able to find his relatives locally. Thanks for the info everyone. Willkeep y'all updated........NGE

That serial number was issued by the 2nd service command late in WWII to a draftee.
(AAF should stand for Army Air Force)

Second Service/Corps Area (New Jersey-Delaware-New York) HQ=Governors Island, N.Y.

Remark 2: due to the enormous increase in numbers of service men, the War Department was obliged to introduce additional series of digits - furthermore some Service Commands inducted more than 1,000,000 men ! Consequently, the W.D. launched a new series of digits for DRAFTEES starting with 4 as first digit, immediately followed by the second digit (indicating Corps Area/Service Command); as a result of this, the Second Service Command received a new series starting from 42,000,000 > 42,999,999 whereas the Fourth Service Command was given another series starting from 44,000,000 > 44,999,999 ! This explains the introduction of series starting with digit 4 . Let's take a serviceman with ASN 42076794 - the first digit 4 points to a new series introduced for draftees called until January 43, while digit 2 indicates the man originates from the Second Service Command/Corps Area

Thanks Military collector. I was looking on Wikipedia about AAF history. Does that mean then that the rest of the numbers mean that he was the 017,381st. inductee of the 2nd. number issuance or called up person? How can we explain the rest of the numbers? Do you know? Once again, thanks for your input.........NGE
