I'm hoping someone out there in TN land can help me.
I dug up a military dog tag today and would love to track down the owner or a relative to return it to them.
It has the persons name and a series of numbers.
Is there a site I could go to that may list the service men, and/or the tag numbers?
I'll be posting it later tonight with my other finds from today.
Thanks,
MM

Bdoo,
Thank you for those sites. Gypsy found a positive lead aleady in my post. I'm hoping it is the right person.

Awesome! It is so exciting that you may be able to return this tag, there is no better feeling than to bring a piece of a person's past back to them!!! Bryan

Thanks Bryan. I hope it's real, and not just one made up for a kid.
I'll be Googling a bit to see what some look like.
Thanks Buddy.

If it is from the marine corps you can get in touch with Commandt of the marine corps in Washington DC and they'll put you on to info they have. Also, not sure if they can still release info anymore due to all the privacy act stuff, the VA can give you information if the person is still drawing disability or other benefits. Haven't had a need to use these recently but it worked.

Oh, it helps if you have a letter prepared before hand. If they give you the I can't release that info jive, hande them the letter and ask them to write the address on it and drop it in the mail for you.

Works two ways, clerks will do it after you leave, and if you get it back "not at this address" it'll give you a lead.

I would like to see a pic of it and I can probably tell you if it is genuine. Bryan

Bryan,
Ask and you shall receive. Here is a photo of it, and some info so far off of my post:

The Dog tag, well, that is without a doubt a legit one from either WW2 era or Korean War. A 71 year old would be old enough for WW2 Smiley but for Korean War era, just on the edge, so that may be the right Perkins but perhaps it is not.

The numbers are not SS#, that did not even start until years after I joined the military in 1965, so that happened much later, the notch is of the style from the period I mentioned. The dog tag is a super find and it would be nice if that Frank Perkins Gypsy found is the right one.

Don,
Thanks so much. It looks to be legit from the July 1943-March 1944 era according to this site too:
http://home.att.net/~steinert/us_army_ww2_dog_tags.htm
If you notice the name "Frank" comes first on the tags from that time period instead of the last name. The next series would start with the last name.
Again, according to that site, it appears to translate to:

July 1943-March 1944
Army Draftee
Third Army Area
Fourth Corps. (NC, SC,GA, FL, TN, AL,Miss, LA)

I hope I can find the guy.
Thanks again Don!

Awesome find, it is genuine. That little notch in it is for the person's teeth should they be Killed In Action. They would open the deceased's mouth and jam it in the mouth with the notch in the teeth. Excellent find. I found one on Seymour Johnson AFB, where I work, with a notch, but the tag was blank, of all things. Good luck on finding the owner, Bryan
