Today I went back to one of my old hunting grounds and I told my wife that I would be happy if I could find a button, which I did. Does anyone have any info on this button? I don't think it's very old and I found it not far from the dog tag?

Nice! Are you going to try to get the dog tag back to the owner?

If I'm not mistaken the button woulda come off a blue navy heavy coat ,Ww2 - Vietnam era ,Just a thought of what I have seen before

Nice finds raylinhn! The button looks like it may have been off of some old sailor dress pants. One of the 13 buttons (for the 13 colonies) in the front of the pants.

You might find that soldier or his next of kin. The first number "3" means he was drafted. The second number "4" means he entered service in the area of the 4th Corps--(NC, SC, GA, FL, MS and Tenn). Since you are in GA, you might already be close.

Yes but nothing so far. I remember researching a Goble milk jug from a homestead site and back in the day they were the largest distributors out of SC into GA. Since His name is James C. Goble maybe he is connected, I wish I knew how to trace that dog tag.

Put it on the "What Is It?" forum and folks like Mackaydon should be able to help you out. Those guys are amazing in terms of what they can find.

One suggestion is to contact your local VFW and American Legion Posts. Tell them what you have and where you found it then ask for their assistance in returning the tag to the owner or next of kin. Let us know how that worked out if you choose to go that way.

Well, it is a long shot, but there is a James C. Goble, listed as a former US Army paratrooper, living now and actively involved in local politics in Nehalem, Tillimook County, Oregon.
I found this on line,

GOBLE,James C.
- ? - ? - From high school joined the Army as a Para-trooper with the 82 Airborne Division and spent five years with tours of combat duty in both the Dominican Republic and Vietnam. biography on Tillimook County Futures

He may have been trained as a paratrooper at the Airborne training school at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and therefore could have lost his dogtag in that state.

I found this online for James C. Goble as he ran for a local board position. It might be worth a telephone call in case he is the veteran you are looking for, or is related to him. Best of luck, Sub.

James (Jim) Goble (503-368-4146)
PO Box 494
Nehalem, OR 97131

The IP's James C. Gobel had his first military tetanus shot in 1942 (the "42" on the tag) so I'd doubt it's the same James C. Gobel as noted above; especially, after seeing the Viet Nam reference. BTW, there are many free (for a week ONLY) sites where you might find this hero. Archives.com, Ancestry.com and myheritage.com are three.

Thanks for the education on deciphering dogtags, Mackaydon. The tags most likely were for a WW2 veteran.

There is a burial record for veteran:

Goble,James C.January 17, 1920May 12, 1985CPL US Army Air Corps World War II

Interned at:

Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery
This cemetery is located about 4 miles south of Ellijay on Hwy. 5 in Gilmer County, Georgia.
Is this close to where you found your dog tag, raylinhn? Sub

Good catch, Subterranean, now, 'raylinhs', you may have found your GI. Next step would be to contact the cemetery and ask for next of kin data. In the event they don't have any, I'd suggest you search the obits for that area; there you will see listed the next of kin.
