Found this old military button. Will try to see any words on back when I get home. Thinking civil war but not sure. Thoughts?

Your find is the US Army Artillery officer's uniform button made from 1854-1874. (Prior to that time period, both Officer and Enlisted-men's US Army buttons had the branch-of-service initial letter in the shield, but from 1854 to 1902 only officer buttons had the initial.)

Your button appears to have one of the many versions of Horstmann Company backmark. I can see "HORSTMANN" and "PHI" (abbreviation for Philadelphia)… but there seems to be some additional letters. Please let us know everything it says -- which could narrow down the 20-year date range.
