It appears to be a U.S. Army enlisted man's collar disk, and one of the types in use during or after World War II.

however, some people say is is a button from WW II or could possibly pre-date that. It would be great if i could se an exact picture of it somewhere else

Hey, GC—

Try an eBay search for "WWII US collar disk." Most of the time there will be a pair, one with "U.S." and the other with the branch of service insignia: crossed rifles for infantry, etc. If you can't find any exactly like yours, do the same search in "Completed Items." A Google images search should get you some good hits, too.

Shown below are a couple of WWII period "U.S." collar disks. Compare those to the third (bottom) disk, which is from WWI.

Hope this helps.

All the best,
PBK

the design appears similar, but the consrcution is not the same. all of those are flat, mine is more of a dome, also, the U.S. is seperate from the actual disk......is it possible that this is some other WW II item, perhaps, a button?

There were many variations and configurations of collar brass. Both flat and rounded face. Yours is probably from the Korean war period or a little after.

GC—

Domed collar disks appeared as early as 1937 (Type III); however, some disks remained flat. In fact, the same is true of disks all the way through Type V, c. 1943-70, although domed versions became increasingly common from Type III on.

ok, now i understand that. So, this disk is most likely from WW II or what? Mine seems fairly crude with the two pieces separate from eachother and connected by a bar. Would that make mine the older type 3 version?

Type III: 1937-1944 (Revived in 1970.)

Type IV: 1942-1943

Type V: 1943-1970

So, yes, your collar disk could have been worn in World War II.
