military button no back mark?[B][/B]

just found this next to foundation of a colonial house

the base metal appears very grey unlike bronze

i did a little cleaning with lemon juice at the bunched arrows

no back mark or gilding maybe plated ?

The button is a generic Civil War era General Service button with a blank back.

Nice finds!

So did the white stuff come out of the pewter thing? What's inside that looks like wires? Battery?

do you think it was once plated or gilded?

They were made from brass. Most the time they were gold gilted. If I were you I would hunt out that same exact spot. Good chance there could be more.

My wife found a button possibly the exact same or slightly off. After much research I came to guess that its a waturbury button, from right around WWI. Probably civilian. Yours might be slightly off but hopefully this gives you a place to start. I think the one i have was actually WAC womens air corp volunteers.
