I found this button at a civil war site in Jackson, MS. The soil was not kind to it but I believe you can see most of the important features on it. I posted the back of the button as well but it is so encrusted that I cannot make out any backmarks so I've had to rely on the eagle style for identification. Is this some type of early U.S. staff officer button? I can't find an identical picture in my button book so I'm reaching out to this audience for any help with a positive i.d. Thanks!

It is a general staff button and the only one listed in Alberts button book having five arrows in the eagles right talon. Going by the backmarks listed I would date this button to between 1840 and 1850.

Do you have Albert's book? If so it is GS 21 on page 293. If you don't have the book I can post a scan of the page for you.
