found one on the pc like this one except eagle facing the other way. this is a pre may 14,1941 navy button.

It is a US Navy button. The specific emblem on its front, a droop-winged eagle facing its left side, standing on a horizontal anchor above three cannonballs, has been in use on US Navy buttons from the late-1840s until May 1941. So, we'll need to see a close-up photo of the backmark (maker's-mark) on your US Navy button's back in order to date it.

the back of button is iron, about 3/4 " dia.

I think that is 19mm. The only iron backed US Navy button that I am aware of is a 13mm Kepi hat button.

Its definitely a US Navy eagle but the iron back may mean that its a non military issued button. But I am not 100 percent sure. Because iron rusts Navy buttons are usually brass.
