While I was digging up pieces of old rusted iron parts, my sister got one beep and we dug up what looks to be a old brass belt buckle. I saw some similar pieces, but wonder if this is authentic or possibly a replica. Let me know what y'all think.

That my friend is a sick belt buckle! it looks as some of the detail has fallen off from bottom and sides of eagle. it had other attached parts. i would guess 1850s issue? us military civil war for sure

welcome to the forum by the way.

Wow!!:thumbsup: That's really cool!! It looks like a civil war sword belt plate. Here is a link to one on eBay.

What kind of place did you find this at ? Ie.: what type site ?

I found a supposed CW buckle once, at a historic site. However, it turned out to be a replica. Believe it or not replicas have been around since the early 1960s. Made/manufactured because, as you know CW re-enactment nostalgia/history buffs have been around since even the 1960s. And the site I found something similar at was also the location where re-enactments had gone on.

But there are tell-tale marks that experts can spot to tell the difference. But so long as you weren't hunting a spot where re-enactment pageants and stuff goes on, yours is probably the real deal. Nice find ! Welcome to T'net.

jw, your buckle is CW era and a real one. the nickel silver wreath that was once soldered on is missing with remains of the solder showing. Nice find!!

Now that's a plate to be proud of, super condition minus the applied wreaths.
