Hello, I'm completely new to the the forum so forgive my ignorance! I found this item on while digging my allotment (Brighton, England). Its about the size of a UK 50p coin and has a broken clasp on the reverse. I have no idea what it is so any help would be welcome as its driving me mad trying to find out what it is - and I've naturally had loads of fun taken out of me - so all jokes appreciated. The allotment site was established in 1912 so there may be some history behind the badge, and I'm trying to find out who had the plot before me as I could do some digging (ho ho!). I'd be grateful for any suggestions - event determining if its NOT military.

Fantastic site by the way.

many thanks

Denis

After a search I am not coming up with a military match, but that doesn't mean anything. We have quite a few UK members on this site, hopefully one of them might chime in soon and give you some better help.

BTW: Welcome to the forums, don't be a stranger!

It reminds me of the letter "R" that goes with the letter "G" as in GR ( George Rex or King George ). That script R that you dug could have been attached to just about anything military that was issued by England. I've seen some early leather cartridge boxes with a similar R (next to the G of course). Just my guess and I could be wrong but do a little research on it. Tennessee digger

I though the same thing Tennessee Digger, but couldn't find a match to the font style, maybe you'll have better luck, after looking for a while everything I saw looked the same!

I wonder if seeing the remnants of the clasp on back might help date the piece?

I would agree it's Military WWI shoulder/lapel badge.

For some reason I thought I saw something like this on a car badge one time.

Thank you so much for your efforts chaps, its very much appreciated. Trying to scan in the reverse of the 'badge' but my scanner is currently unresponsive (swine). Will upload as soon as I can, sorry. Thought I'd share some of the other finds from the allotment, recovered from quite deep (about a metre) when digging out deep weeds (more swines). Despite initially thinking these might be a sword, shield handle and fair maidens broach, would appreciate any (pragmatic) suggestions. what do you think?

cheers

oh yes, and another more shocking discovery, a real, properly grown, organic and very tasty, marrow (chuffed to bits)

Not sure what those hunks of iron are, but generally we clear them from sites & don't keep them:thumbsup:

Hah! very good Crusader, made me chuckle! :icon_thumright:Here is the reverse of the 'badge'. Maybe this is another chunk of metal that needs chucking. On another note, is it common for people to get obsessed by these things?:BangHead: (By the way, absolutely loving browsing this website, and telling everyone I know about it, superb stuff)

No its a good find & may even pre-date WWI. I can see 2 fixings but not very well. Are they 2 loops? Or are they something else?

Crusader.... it looks like it had a pin on the back. Tennessee digger

Yes Crusader, there was definitely a pin on the reverse. There is a hook (bottom) and 'joint' (top) where the pin was. Also, there is no suggestion that is has been broken off anything else, like a 'G' as had been suggested. Looks very much like a stand alone item.

OK. A pin arranagement or typical badge pin suggests it's not formal Military, but most likely associated with it in some way like the sweet heart brooches. Although I have tons of Military Cap Badges etc.. I don't have time to search these more modern items & have concentrated on the older than 17th C stuff. So I will bow out, & hope someone else steps in.

As I just said, with the pin (as pictured above), this seems much more likely than Military. Although it still looks about 100 years old. So I think you have solved it - nice search.

Phew, a ladies broach, well well. Many thanks for your efforts, its very much appreciated. I guess I'll now downgrade my 'sword' to 'an old metal bar' and my shield handle to 'an old bucket handle'.

Aahhh, but who is 'R' ... the search goes on ...

thanks again guys and good luck
