UPDATE: Buckle straightened, a bit.

I thought this was just a mangled piece of scrap when I first dug it up. But after rinsing the mud off, I think this used to be a buckle of some sort? :icon_scratch:

It appears to be brass. I'd try to straighten it out a bit but there are too many cracks. So, anyone able to do a little mental jigsaw puzzling?

Here's a few angles:

There seems to be a bit of thin something silver in the loop. Maybe a remnant of plating or some sort of cushioning for the link or maybe a piece of tin foil that got stuck in there whilst buried. ;)

Whatcha think? Buckle or mangled ornamental?

Thanks!

Looks like that artifact got hit by Farmer Joes plow more than once. Can you see anything stamped on it anywhere?

I tried to find anything on it, but, alas, no. It's only about an inch long, maybe 2 if straightened out. :dontknow:

I've 'heard' that you can boil metal, and while still warm GENTLY straighten it out. I've never tried it, but have seen good results. Of course, PLEASE DON'T DO IT if you think it will break it. If you're going to throw it away as scrap, you could use it as your experiment piece.

Hi Breezie!

Yep, great minds think alike. Unless this said George Washington's buckle right on it, I planned on experimenting with straightening it out. If it breaks, so be it, not much to lose, huh. :)

Thanks!

Hope all is well!

Welp, I tried my best. As an artifact restorer, I lack a LOT! ;)

But, here's some more pics after trying to straighten. The little piece next to it is what was stuck in the loop/tab.

I still don't have a clue. Looks better now though. :)

Thanks!

Now I think I can tell what it is . . .well, what it was LOL! It looks like a cape/cloak hook closure. The folded over tab thingie may have gotten bent the wrong way. :) Breezie

Hmmm, interesting. I wonder though, if this might be something like one half? The bent over tab looks designed that way to me. Kind of like those two part civil war buckles I see on here. But, just a civilian type? Think in terms of the tab matching up with another end/piece. Whatcha think?

Thanks!

Yes, I should have been clearer. It's HALF of a cloak/cape closure hook. :) Breezie

Think you are referring too a Two Piece buckle. You are thinking this could possibly be the "tongue" of a two piece buckle.

It's not you, Breezie. I can be VERY dense sometimes. LOL

1900's?

Thanks again!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking. But, I think Lady Breezie has nailed it again.

Thanks!

Yeah, I'd say around the 1900's because it's not very ornate like the hard core Victorian pieces. Remember during the Victorian era every thing had do-dads, swirls, twirls, flowers, and any other dust catcher shape that comes to mind. :)

Actually it looks more like a man's cape closure.
