Back in 1994, I had the opportunity to read a diary that a resident loaned me. It belonged to Sgt. William Smith of the 7th Illinois Cavalry, Company F of the Civil War. I was keeping the material for a possible future book. I used some of it in my Forts, Camps and Batteries of Tennessee and Georgia but the mid-states didn't offer me much material to make a decent book so I'll disclose some of the sites on here for all of you to enjoy and perhaps recover some of the Civil War finds. I should hope I get an invitation if the site proves juicy. 8)
***************************
Cairo, Illinois: Fort Holt was located 1.5 miles from Bird's Point, Mo. It was a triangular shaped earthwork fort from 1861 to 1865.

Cape Girardeau, Mo: This town was set on a rocky bluff. Ten miles away is Dutch Town which was visited by Union cavalry during a raid.

60 miles west of Cape Girardeau is Fredricktown where a battle was fought. Fort was situated at Cape Girardeau on the hill (bluff) covering the river. Some action took place at Bird's Point. Colonel Hainey's regiment was encamped within 12 miles of Columbus, Ky in January, 1862. Eight companies of Union troops were garrisoned at Bird's Point.

Dallas & Jackson, Mo were raided by Union cavalry.

Bloomfield, Mo. had a Confederate encampment commanded by a Colonel Kitchell.

Near Dutch Town is Whitewater Creek. Union cavalry forded the creek at the ferry site. They rode 18 miles to Springhill and captured the Castor Creek bridge before riding into Bloomfield, Mo.

Town of Commerce, Mo. was occupied by Union troops.

A Union camp was located 2 miles from New Madrid, Mo. on March 3, 1862.

Saxtown was the site of a Confederate POW camp guarded by Unnion troops. Later a battle took place at Saxtown.

9th Wisconsin Infantry occupied Point Pleasant, Mo.

That should keep ya'll busy for a while. Don't go asking me a bunch of fool questions or pump me for more information on these sites. These are the only clues I have written down. Do your research and maybe you'll find a virgin site. Good Luck and remember that invitation, lol. ;)
