For ease I titled it day 2 but we have had a few more visits than that this year. We gridded on for 4.5 hours in an area outside of the Saxon Settlement, so we are not expecting anything of that period. (although a random sceat could be anywhere) At this point any hammered is a bonus & the odd Roman Coin pops up.
Middle of Nov & its still T-Shirt weather.:icon_scratch:

Ed I hammered

Love Token - sixpence
Buttons;

I love those livery buttons. Do you dig a lot of them? I guess I'm asking if they're fairly common. There's a guy here in the stares that emailed me a pic of one he found and it's beautiful. Hoping he will post it tonight. I'm assuming they are fairly scarce here in the States. Another great outing/outings Cru.

Schweet coins and buttons

A pyramid button is high on my list, these tiny ones are my fave buttons anyway. Nice livery too + a hammered and a love token....great day!

WTG Cru! You guys are so steeped in history over there.

You guys pull out so much history from the ground over there! Congrats!

:icon_thumright: It's always a treat to view your posts -- and this one is no exception! :icon_thumright: Cru & CruDad are a super team! :icon_thumleft: Andi

Livery buttons belonged to large wealthy families who could afford a few servants to put them on. People think that its the family crest but this only accounts for some of them & during the mid-19th C the self made industrialists & other middle-class trades made enough money for their own servants. However, they were not all from the landed upper class so had no family crest, they would offen just pick a design they liked off the shelf so it would create the impression that had better breading than they really did.

We probably find about 20-40 a year.

They do turn up in the States, but I'm unsure why they don't turn up in more numbers. Maybe the British style of servant (including coachmen & footmen) uniforms were not fashionable in the new world??

Thanks for the explanation Cru. Vino just posted a very nice livery button

Gr8 as always! GZ!

Digging a nice Livery button is up there for a smiling find during a hunt. Though one of the wants is a great looking Fibular Brooch that's not broken or moth eaten. Once again Cru there's always a warm feeling inspiration looking at your post of finds and it certainly keeps the dreams alive between my opportunities to hunt British dirt.

What I forgot to mention is I got another one of those strange moulded tombacs with 'MAPPEN WISBECH' on the reverse. Funny that they wanted people to know who made the buttons but couldn't work out that you needed to put it in reverse for it to be readable. ie. its in reverse on the button
